This four-year-old boy's mother was killed in Gisenyi in late 1997.
In January 1998, a young man who refused to destroy his plantation was reportedly beaten by soldiers in Gisenyi.
Many of the houses are believed to have been empty as people had already fled; however, a number of people were burned alive in their homes, such as André Bayagiteto, an old man in his seventies, in Nyabirehe secteur in Mukingo.

Those originating from Ruhengeri and Gisenyi are provided with a two-week WFP ration and are registered as beneficiaries for general food distributions in their communes of origin.
Of additional concern in Gisenyi is that approximately 79% of households lack any sort of food stocks and, on average, 82% of their expenditures are on food.
General rations lasting between one to four weeks are being supplied to returnees on arrival at their communes of origin and the registration of the 600,00 Rwandan returnees is said to be continuing in the communes without major disruption.

It is estimated some 300,000 people have fled Goma and sought refuge in Gisenyi and surrounding areas, on the Rwandan side of the border.
Although the volcano seems to have calmed down for now, another lava flow is threatening the town of Gisenyi, and Red Cross volunteers are currently persuading refugees to leave Gisenyi, and to walk to three other refugee camps, situated some 20 to 25 kilometres away.
The International Federation has two evaluation and coordination teams on the ground, one in Gisenyi and one in Kigali and is working in close collaboration with the ICRC delegations there.

 Rwanda: Civilians trapped in armed conflict - "The dead can no longer be counted."
Thousands of RPA troops are reported to be engaged in counter-insurgency operations, under the command of Colonel Kayumba Nyamwasa, the deputy chief of staff of the Gendarmerie, now effectively in charge of military operations in the northwest.
This attack is believed to have been carried out by an armed opposition group, several members of whom had been killed by RPA soldiers a few weeks earlier, after André Ntezilizaza had reported their presence to the local authorities.
On 2 December, a local detention centre at Rwerere, in Gisenyi, was reportedly attacked by armed groups, and around 100 detainees released.

The objectives of the meeting were to review the situation in the Northwest of Rwanda and to examine the status of assistance provided through presentations relating to the areas of health and nutrition, agriculture, water and sanitation.
While the IDP population had peaked at 652,113 during the month of December 1998, as of the beginning of March 1999, their number was estimated to be 508,626.
Where insecurity persists, in communes such as Giciye in eastern Gisenyi and in the south west of Ruhengeri as far as Cyabingo, some families have been relocated to a particular area but may move again once the situation improves.

One of the biggest and worrying problems in Gisenyi is that many of the public and private high schools do not have dormitories or hostels for the students.
This project is mainly for the girls in Gisenyi high schools who have no adequate place to stay.
It is hoped that the project will enable girls not to give up on their education and also improve the quality of education in Gisenyi.

CARE Rwanda's Gisenyi Land and Environment Rehabilitation Project (GLER) aims to respond to short term conditions of increased degradation of the Gishwati forest as well as reduce chronic vulnerabiltiy of surrounding communities.
CARE will work with 25,000 poor rural families to diversify their land use management skills and promote restoration and protection of this delicate natural resource.
CARE will strengthen capacity with local authorities and organisations to prevent environmental crises and develop response strategies in the event of soil erosion, floods and land slides.

Last night, as I was sitting in a seminar (on portrait photography -- I should be paying more attention), I decided to catch up on some of my Rwanda mission shots.
This one is of a boy at our clinic in Gisenyi being checked for an eye infection.
It was very common for the children to have eye problems, ranging from conjunctivitis to much more serious problems.
