Gasarabwe's troops are defending a critical area from just south of Gitarama to the southwestern city of Butare.
They are defending the key east-west road from Gitarama to the Zairean border town of Kibuye, which if captured would split the government territory in two.
Gasarabwe said he also is trying to recapture the main north-south road 12 miles away that connects Gitarama to Kigali and the capital to Uganda, the main rebel supply route.

Wednesday started with a return trip to Gitarama to learn more about what the IWACU instructor was teaching: more on accounting and ledgers, then touching on marketing and product pricing followed by an introduction to micro-credit lending.
It was then off to Gitarama at the Maison des Femmes where women from all over the country can come and stay to take courses in IT, business and other courses important for Rwanda's entry into the global economy.
Representatives of each of the 16 knitting cooperatives, the women from the Kiziba refugee camp cooperative (whose success story was responsible for starting this whole thing) plus the knitting instructors were there to participate in the cooperative training in management and finance.

In Gitarama, specifically, in 1999 the province was estimated to have approximately 2,500 child-headed households (CHH), defined as households with no adult members.
According to the DHS, approximately 4.0% of children 14 and under in Gitarama are living in CHHs.
These figures are for the prevalence of HIV, but presumably the incidence is also high, as the life expectancy at diagnosis with HIV infection in Rwanda is approximately four years, and the prevalence of HIV infection has been steadily increasing for the past four years.

In Rwanda, a tiny, strife-torn East African country, national UNV field workers are helping widows and girl orphans raise an income in the rural areas around Umutara, Kibungo, Kigali Rural, Butare and Gitarama.
Auréa Gasengayire, Drocelle Mukazayire and Hélène Muragijemariya, all Rwandans, are three of the UN Volunteer field workers taking part in a UNV programme targeting the needs of some 17,000 people.
In the district of Gitarama, a prefecture of 853,000 people about 50 kilometres from the capital Kigali, the UN Volunteers have since 1997 helped form 13 groups promoting microprojects and revitalizing activities for the development of 10 associations.

New York, September 15, 2005—The Committee to Protect Journalists today condemned the arrest of Jean Léonard Rugambage, a reporter for the twice-monthly newspaper Umuco who accused judges of a traditional court in Rwanda of corruption.
Rugambage has been held without charge since his arrest on September 7 in the central town of Gitarama.
He has been given no reason for his arrest but local journalists believe it is linked to an article he wrote in September, which accused judges at a "gacaca" court in the Gitarama region of using the traditional justice system for personal gain and the settling of scores.

The prefect of Gitarama, Desire Nyandwi, narrowly escaped death when his vehicle was ambushed.
Local officials said a group of unidentified people, some wearing military uniforms, others dressed in long overall coats and armed with guns and traditional weapons, descended on the homes of the two families, killing people while they slept.

Early this year (2004) we established a Committee within St. James Church to establish our "Sisterhood" with the Parish of Gitarama in Rwanda.
Father Bob sent a letter and photo package to Gitarama and an e-mail has been sent to Bishop Kalimba.
We have not received a response to these as yet but are proceeding with plans to begin fund raising and education of our own members.

afrol News, 27 April - Samuel Musabyimana (44), formerly Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Shyogwe, Gitarama prefecture in Rwanda, was arrested in Nairobi yesterday and transferred immediately to the Detention Facility of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha.
Musabyimana is charged with four counts including Genocide, Conspiracy to commit Genocide and Crimes against Humanity, specifically extermination, according to information from the ICTR.
The indictment charges that during April and May 1994, following escalation of the Rwandan conflict in Gitarama prefecture, Bishop Musabyimana publicly stated "that the situation for the Tutsi was very bad and that their end had arrived," according to a statement from the Tribunal.
