Gitche Manitou (or Gichi-Manidoo, Gitchi Manitou, Gitchie Manitou, Gitchee Manitou, or Kitche Manitou), in traditional Algonquian First Nations culture, is the Great Spirit, the Creator of all things and the Giver of Life.
In addition to the Algonquin proper, Gitche Manitou was known to the related Odawa and Ojibwe tribes.
Gitche Manitou is often treated as those cultures' analogue to the Christian God.

All was pretty much well and good, though, according to Old Mother Manitou's (possibly inaccurate) version of the story, until Ocryana got jealous and demanded powers equal to Ocryx's.
She got greater powers, all right, and promptly used them to turn Ocryx into the wolf demon that came to bear his name.
Out of rage he did the same thing to her, then Gitchi Manitou had to separate them and put them to sleep before they could tear each other's throat out.

My family's Cree is definitly influenced by Ojibway, although we do not consider ourselves Oji-Cree.
But we call the Creator, Gitchi Manitou, or "The Great Spirit".
As I have said before, in no sacred story have I ever heard or read does the Great Spirit ever come down and help anybody.
