As the track was being used at the same time by a racing school, Cabianca completed a number of laps at reduced speed until the students left, at which time he increased his pace.
Cabianca had his accident on his ninth lap at speed, sometime around six o'clock in the afternoon.
Cabianca was found conscious, but passed away later that same day at 21 hours at the St. Agostino hospital, located very near the track.

A gentleman of Verona, Cabianca started racing in his mid-twenties when the sport was revived in Italy in the late 1940s, making his name initially in small capacity sports cars.
He became the most famous driver of the OSCA company, established after the war by the Maserati brothers.
Cabianca was killed as were the three people in the taxi.

In 1954, Giulio Cabianca piloted an OSCA similar to this one.
But on the road, the speed and handling of the Porsche was astonishing, and the Spyder, driven by a young and hungry Hans Hermann, proved too much for even Cabianca.
Cabianca finished an honorable second, but still ten minutes behind the twenty five year old German.

Munaron's one-off team mates for the race were Giorgio Scarlatti (in a Maserati-engined T51) and Giulio Cabianca, who followed three works Ferraris home in fourth, edging out the F2 Ferrari of Von Trips.
In a sense, Cabianca was the star of the race, qualifying fourth and holding his position the entire race - the true high point of his career.
It was also the place where Eugenio Castellotti died three years earlier after returning to Europe to test for Ferrari, hot from a famous sportscar win at the Buenos Aires 1000 kms.

In its new form, the car featured some revisions to the Scaglietti bodywork, plus disc brakes, but by the time it made its first race appearance the body had been changed again, as it was now virtually identical to the Pinin Farina design on the 1959 Testa Rossa.
It won its first race, the Coppa Sant’Ambroeus, at Monza on May 3, 1959, driven by Giulio Cabianca, but thereafter its racing glory disappeared, with retirements for a variety of reasons.
The only redemption came in its final known competition appearance, at the Auto Club Genova organized Pontedecimo-Giovi Hillclimb on September 20, 1959, where Giorgio Scarlatti finished second overall.

In the race Ginther and Hill led while Mairesse was slowed by team orders to help tow a fourth Ferrari - an F2 car being driven by Wolfgang Von Trips - away from the two Porsches.
This helped Giulio Cabianca to run third in his Castellotti Cooper.
Mairesse eevntually made his way back to third place while Hill passed early leader Ginther to win the race.

The TR60 entered in the 1960 Targa Florio for Richie Ginther and Cliff Allison contended for the win but did not finish due to an accident as Ginther hit a tree!
The Scuderia's main 1960 Targa Florio effort was the entry of Dino 246S models; they finished second (Wolfgang Von Trips/Phil Hill) and fourth (Willy Mairesse/Ludovico Scarfiotti/Giulio Cabianca).
The Testa Rossa's initial incarnation, the TR58 of 1958, won four FIA Sports Car World Championship rounds.

Though his Grand Prix outings were few, he lay fifth in Bonnier’s Maserati in the 1958 Italian GP before engine trouble, and scored points in the boycotted 1960 Italian GP for Scuderia Castellotti.
He lost his life testing one of Castellotti’s Coopers at Modena in June 1961 when the throttle stuck open; the car ran through an open gateway into the street and crashed into a passing taxi, killing not only Cabianca but also the three unfortunate occupants of the cab.
