ROME - Italy's Economy Minister Giulio Tremonti resigned and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was temporarily taking over his portfolio, Ansa news agency reported early Saturday after Deputy Prime Minister Gianfranco Fini demanded a change in economic policy.
Berlusconi's spokesman Paolo Bonaiuti simply stated that the makeup of the government had to be approved by the president, hinting that Tremonti's resignation would not become effective until it was received by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Ansa said.
Demands by several coalition parties including the Northern League caused Berlusconi to warn his partners Thursday they would be defeated at the polls if their attempts to change policy by threatening to resign forced him to call an early election.
