Campari's job eventually involved test driving factory cars and his skills and interest led to his participation in competitive hillclimbing events.
Campari won his second French Grand Prix driving for Maserati, but at age 41 was ready to retire at the end of the season.

The Alfa Corse team raced sportscars with much success in those early years with drivers such as Giuseppe Campari, Antonio Ascari, Ugo Sivocco (who was also chief of the test department) and Enzo Ferrari.
Such was the success of the P2 that FIAT decided to pull out of racing at the end of the year to avoid further humiliation at the hands of its upstart rival.
The P2 continued to be the dominant car of 1925 but in July that year Ascari crashed and was killed during the French GP at Montlhery.

Driving one lovely 2000cc Alfa was the Baroness Maria Antonietta Avanzo, one of Italy's earliest woman racers, and she began a tradition as woman drivers and co-drivers became a frequent occurrence at later runnings of the Mille.
Back in 1929, though, the winner was again Giuseppe Campari, who drove for over 18 solid hours and beat his prior year's record by 1 hour and 10 minutes.
