ArtScope.net: Splendors of China's Forbidden City
Castiglione's significant skill is evident in his application of Western styles of rendering to the medium of the tempera, particularly in representing the subtleties of drapery, its shine and folds, and in his remarkable ability to conjure depthful portraits from the proscriptions of the Qing court: eyes front, no shadows.
Further mystery is added by Castiglione's unusual choice of a solid color-field background, filling in the entire space behind the two subjects with a moody and somewhat overpowering blue that isolates the figures in their barren landscape and makes the slender stalks of light-green bamboo all but vibrate in their vivid tonal contrast.
Though Castiglione was Yongzheng's court painter at the time, it is said that Qianlong greatly approved of this likeness of himself as a youth, adding imperial seals and a poem much later in life to show his appreciation.

In his painting, Giuseppe Castiglione not only gave special attention to the dissection of structure proportions, focal perspectives, light and shadow effects as well as effects of trio-dimensions, but also absorbed the skills of traditional Chinese realistic painting with a detailed fine brushwork.
Giuseppe Castiglione, who knew traditional Chinese culture well, was certainly unwilling to draw the dragon as a vicious symbol which was also a symbol of the Chinese Emperor who was the "real son of the heavenly dragon" and a totem of the Chinese nation who claimed to be the "offspring of the dragon".
Besides Giuseppe Castiglione, there were other Jesuit missionary painters who served in the Imperial Court in the period of Emperor Qian Long, such as A Qimeng (1708-1780) and Wang Zhicheng and Pan Tingzhang.

 Chinese Imperial Vases - AMAM
Among the most important Jesuits to teach in China during the eighteenth century was the Italian missionary and painter Giuseppe Castiglione, who arrived in China in 1715 and lived there until he died in 1766.
4 While it is highly unlikely that Castiglione personally had any hand in the decoration of these vases, they may well have been painted by a second- or third-generation follower of his style. The vases are marked on the bottom with a four-character seal reading "Qianlong yuzhi," ("Made for the Qianlong emperor").
Among the numerous books and articles about Castiglione, see especially Michel Beurdeley, Giuseppe Castiglione: A Jesuit Painter at the Court of the Chinese Emperors (Rutland, Vt., 1971); and Orientations 19, no. 1 (November 1988)--an entire issue is dedicated to this artist.

The introduction of copper-engraving into China - 62nd IFLA General Conference
He therefore ordered his court painters Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining), Denis Attiret (Wang Zhicheng), Ignaz Sichelbart (Ai Qimeng) and Giovanni Damasceno Sallusti (An Deyi) to prepare sketches for the engravings, which they did in 1764 and 1765.
Last not least there is another important Chinese copper-engraving from the 18th century, namely a set of 20 views of the Xiyulou, the European buildings which formed part of the imperial summer palace, Yuanmingyuan, and which is currently partly under reconstruction.
They were done by disciples of Castiglione in 1783, and they prove now invaluable to the reconstruction project.
