Topic: Giuseppe Cesari

In the News (Tue 22 Dec 09)

Giuseppe Cesari - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His father had been a native of Arpino, but Giuseppe himself was born in Rome.
Cesari is stigmatized by Lanzi as not less the corrupter of taste in painting than Marino was in poetry; indeed, another of the nicknames of Cesari is "Il Marino de Pittori" (the pictorial Marino).
There was spirit in Cesari's heads of men and horses, and his frescoes in the Capitol (story of Romulus and Remus, etc.), which occupied him at intervals during forty years, are well coloured; but he drew the human form ill. His perspective is faulty, his extremities monotonous, and his chiaroscuro defective.

His father, Muzio Cesari, was probably a painter; his brother, Bernardino Cesari (1571–1622), became his principal assistant.
Giuseppe’s precocious talent for drawing led his mother to take him to Rome in 1581–2, where he became a colour mixer under Niccolò Circignani, then directing the decoration of the third of the great Vatican Logge for Gregory XIII.
During 1583 Giuseppe also worked at the Vatican on the monochrome figure of Samson with the Gates of Gaza in the Sala Vecchia degli Svizzeri and the restoration of the Prophets and Virtues painted by the Raphael workshop in the Sala dei Palafrenieri.

This painter, almost totally ignored by modern art historians to the extent that none of his work after the Sistine period has been found, was able to help Caravaggio take his first steps in the world of Roman patronship after the experience in the circle of Giuseppe Cesari, later called the Cavalier d'Arpino.
But according to a note by the biographer Giulio Mancini (1609-1625) it must have been Giuseppe's brother, Bernardino Cesari, who brought Merisi into the family workshop.
It is known that he had painted a portrait of Bernardino, also a painter, but who had been seriously in trouble

Judith with the Head of Holofernes by CESARI, Giuseppe
Cavaliere d'Arpino's (Giulio Cesari's) Judith with the Head of Holofernes symbolically alludes to the violent decapitation of the Assyrian general without showing the gruesome moment that both Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi chose to depict.
Instead a beautiful, almost demure, Judith raises Holofernes' head by his locks as her maidservant Abra looks on in puzzled reverence.
It is likely that the more superficial pictures, such as Judith and Diana, were destined for the open art market and not painted on commission.
