Giuseppe Piazzi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He was not able to observe it long enough (it was soon lost in the glare of the Sun) to compute its orbit with existing methods, but the renowned mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss developed a new method of orbit calculation that allowed astronomers to locate it again.
After its orbit was better determined, it was clear that Piazzi's assumption was correct and this object was not a comet but more like a small planet.
Piazzi named it "Ceres Ferdinandea", after the Classical Greek and Sicilian goddess of grain and King Ferdinand IV of Naples and Sicily.

Piazzi was searching for a star listed by as Mayer 87 because it was not in Mayer's zodiacal catalogue in the position given (it eventually transpired that Wollaston had made a mistake —the star was in fact).
Instead, Piazzi found a moving star-like object, which he thought at first was a comet.
After the discoverer of Ceres, it was nicknamed "Piazzi." In 2004, Ceres was studied with the Keck Telescope.

1 Ceres - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was discovered on January 1, 1801, by Giuseppe Piazzi.
Piazzi was searching for a star listed by Francis Wollaston as Mayer 87 because it was not in Mayer's zodiacal catalogue in the position given (it eventually transpired that Wollaston had made a mistake —the star was in fact Lacaille 87).
Piazzi observed Ceres a total of 24 times, the final time on February 11, when illness interrupted.

 Piazzi, Giuseppe --  Encyclopædia Britannica
Piazzi became a Theatine monk in about 1764 and a professor of theology in Rome in 1779, and in 1780 he was appointed professor of higher mathematics at the Academy of Palermo.
At first Piazzi thought that he had discovered a comet; however, after the orbital elements of the object had been computed it became clear that the object moved in a planetlike orbit between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
The Italian prose writer and poet Giuseppe Parini is remembered for a series of beautifully written odes and particularly for Il giorno (The Day), a satiric poem on the selfishness and superficiality of the Milanese aristocracy.

 Ivars Peterson's MathTrek - Gauss's Orbits
Piazzi's observations of the mysterious object on successive nights revealed that it moved slowly against its starry backdrop, first drifting backward, then reversing direction and overtaking the background stars.
Unsure whether the object was a comet or a planet, Piazzi watched it regularly until Feb. 11, when he fell ill. By the time he recovered a few days later, he was able to make only one more observation before the object advanced sufficiently close to the sun to disappear in its glare.
Assuming that Piazzi's object circumnavigated the sun on an elliptical course and using only three observations of its place in the sky to compute its preliminary orbit, Gauss calculated what its position would be when the time came to resume observations.

ON THE HISTORY OF THE PALERMO ASTRONOMICAL
Piazzi had, in fact, already made up his mind: for the new Observatory he was going to have only the best, and best at that time meant Ramsden.
Piazzi was succeeded by Nicolò Cacciatore (1780-1841), who had served for many years as assistant in the Observatory.
The scientific decline of the Palermo Observatory that followed Piazzi's death was thus due both to the incapability of its head and to the unfavourable political situation.

The Origin of the Palermo Astronomical Observatory Library: Giuseppe Piazzi's (1746-1826) Books
The rationale behind the third criterium is that, no longer being the Director, Piazzi had ceased to acquire publications for the Observatory and thus all new acquisitions were by default the property of the institution or the Director.
As belonging to Piazzi, for instance, are indicated only the volumes of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London or the Mémoires de l'Académie Impériale des Sciences, Littérature et Beaux-Arts de Turin published prior to 1817.
Monticelli was Secretary of Accademia delle Scienze di Napoli and good friend of Piazzi's, who was the President of the same Academy, thus it is highly likely that this publication was given to Piazzi by the author.

Events - Discovery of First Asteroid, Ceres
January 1801, in Palermo, the Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi (1746-1826) discovered Ceres, the first and largest asteroid.
The discovery of Ceres followed that of the planet Uranus, made in 1781 by the British astronomer William Herschel (1783-1822).
Piazzi's discovery confirmed the so-called "Titius-Bode's law", which assumed the existence of a "fifth planet" between the orbit of Mars and Jupiter.

Although he was able to make only three observations of Ceres, Carl Gauss had recently developed a mathematical technique that allowed the orbit to be calculated.
Piazzi also discovered that the star 61 Cygni has a large proper motion, which led Bessel to choose it as the object of his parallax studies.
The thousandth asteroid to be found was named after him.

On Jan. 1, 1801, the Italian astronomer Giuseppi Piazzi found a small planet in the large gap between Mars and Jupiter.
This planet, later named Ceres, was the first and largest of thousands of asteroids, or minor planets, that have been discovered.
The discovery of these tiny planets dates from Jan. 1, 1801, when the Italian astronomer Giuseppi Piazzi found the first one and named it Ceres.
