Mothership Connection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mothership Connection is a funk album by Parliament, released in 1976.
This concept album (see P Funk mythology) is usually rated as one of Parliament's best.
Dre samples the songs "Mothership Connection" and "P-Funk (Wants to Get Funked Up)" on his album The Chronic.

"Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (Give Up The Funk)" became the first Top Ten single for the group, peaking at number five on the US RandB charts, and the album became both the first gold and the first platinum P-Funk LP.
Glen Goins left to form renegage P Funk band Quazar; Jerome Brailey left to form the equally renegade Mutiny; and the original Parliaments formed a renegade Funkadelic of their own.
With the Funk Mob in chaos already, the end of the P seemed nigh.

Parliament - Free Music Downloads, Videos, CDs, MP3s, Bio, Merchandise and Links
While Funkadelic pursued band-format psychedelic rock, Parliament engaged in a funk free-for-all, blending influences from the godfathers (James Brown and Sly Stone) with freaky costumes and themes inspired by '60s acid culture and science fiction.
Signing with the Casablanca label, Parliament's "Up for the Down Stroke" (number ten R&B, number 63 pop) appeared in mid-1974 and reflected a more mainstream approach than Funkadelic, with funky horn arrangements reminiscent of James Brown and a live feel that recalls contemporary work by Kool & the Gang.
Dre, and Warren G.) and funk rock (Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers) re-established the status of Clinton & co., one of the most important forces in the recent history of fl music.

When "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)" steps into second gear, though, bringing in Bootsy's bass, Wesley's horn, Worrell's piano, and a chorus of vocalists, it's fairly evident just how large a step forward "Mothership Connection" is from the conventional R&B roots of "Chocolate City" and "Up for the Down Stroke".
The funk doesn't stop there, though, with the remaining five songs keeping the tempo laden with dense interweaving rhythms, peaking on "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)." In the end, there's no questioning this album's impact, one that is still being felt via rap-induced aftershocks.

Tear the Roof Off the Sucker Tonight on PBS with PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC: One Nation Under a Groove
P-Funk — George Clinton's confabulous mutating fusion of science fiction, animation, whimsy, agitation, and the bodacious, bootilicious, redemptive might of FUNK — is profiled tonight at 10pm in the documentary film PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC: One Nation Under a Groove, on the PBS series Independent Lens.
After forming the Parliaments as a doo-wop group in Newark, NJ in the '50s, Clinton took a severe left turn in the late-'60s as he began to split his time between the heady, meaty, elastic brews of funk and horn-based soul (Parliament), and funk and rocking psychedelia (Funkadelic) that became jointly known as P-Funk.

70s classics like "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)," "Bop Gun," "Flash Light," "Chocolate City" and "Dr. Funkenstein" defined pop-funk outside the limitations of disco.
Of course Funkadelic and Parliament became so interchangeable that, to this day, there are a lot of funk fans who aren't sure which band did which songs.
Which means this is a decent chunk of half of the story, and because these are the original radio edits, it's a story you'll know and love.

With the "Parliafunkadelicment thang," leader George Clinton has succeeded in creating two distinct identities for one band—the mystical voodoo of the Funkadelics and the stabbing, humorous funk of Parliament.
With little regard for theme or lyric development, Clinton weaves a nonstop rap of nonsensical street jargon ("Somebody said, 'Is there funk after death'/I said is seven up") like a freaked out James Brown.
But this album refuses to be taken seriously, except as Clinton's parody of modern funk.

With a set list that comes primarily from 1975's MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION and the follow-up CLONES OF DOCTOR FUNKENSTEIN, and a lineup drawn from both Parliament and Funkadelic--both psychedelic soul guitarist Eddie Hazel and Fred Wesley's gutbucket Horny Horns are on hand--Clinton and company simply burn throughout.
From the loose, wobbly jazz of the opening "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)" through to a blinding fusion of the apocalyptic "Tear the Roof Off the Sucker (Give Up the Funk)" and the crowd-participation "Get Off Your Ass and Jam," this is absolutely as good as funk gets.
This CD version omits one of the two studio tracks, "Fantasy Is Reality," which can be found on the compilation TEAR THE ROOF OFF.
