Giya Kancheli (Georgian: გია ყანჩელი), born August 10, 1935 in Tbilisi, is probably Georgia's most famous living composer and cultural export.
Rodion Shchedrin speaks of Kancheli as "an ascetic with the temperament of a maximalist; a restrained Vesuvius".
In Georgia, Kancheli is well-known for his work in the theatre, from which he draws much of his musical composition.

Giya Kancheli's work "Noon Prayers" for 19 instruments, boy soprano and solo clarinet was given its world premiere on 15 September 2001 at the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt.
Sofia Gubaidulina's Violin Concerto and Giya Kancheli's Styx are both included on a new Deutsche Grammophon CD which is to be issued in March 2002 (DG 471 494-2).
Kancheli's liturgy for large orchestra and solo viola entitled Mourned in the Wind was performed in Görlitz and Kamenz on 1 and 3 March 2002 by the new Lausitz Philharmonic, with Felix Schwartz as soloist.

Kancheli has written seven symphonies, and what he terms a liturgy for viola and orchestra, called Mourned by the Wind His Fourth Symphony recieved its American premiere, with the Philadelphia Orchestra, under Yury Temirkanov, in January 1978, not long before the cultural freeze in the United States against Soviet culture.
Glasnost allowed Kancheli to regain exposure, and he began to recieve frequent commisions, as well as performances within Europe and America.

It has been a criticism of Kancheli that he sounds more inward and recycled with each new release, but within the spectrum of modern classical composers his voice remains uniquely passionate.
Not all of Kanchelis work that has been issued on CD is Kancheli at his best.

Kancheli's usual abrupt and intense dynamic contrasts are present in this piece as well, but not to the extent that one finds in his previous recordings.
It's wonderdul to hear Derek Lee Ragin's angelic indeed voice in another Kancheli work (after the superb 'And Farewell goes out sighing...'), and even though to describe someone's voice as ' angelic' is usually a cliche, in this instance it is perfectly appropriate.
Also wonderful to find Thomas Demenga with his cello as well as a rather unusual for a Kancheli score that includes percussion, piano and guitar in a most innovative and unexpected way.

Some reviewers on other recordings of Kancheli have criticised his use of sudden outbursts of sound, frequent in "A la Duduki" -they have said that he uses this technique to often to make it effective over time.
As most of Kancheli's compositions, it has some kind of eruptive moments, like an animal trying to fight against the supernatural force, but then falling back into the calm and silence after a short struggle.
Music fans with a greater affinity for the contemporary scene, who are usually put off by the jarring bombast of most classical surges (particularly the older stuff that almost everyone feels obliged to rave on about) could well find this album refreshing.
