Project Gizmo challenges Skype | The Register
However, Skype's current pre-eminent position is now facing a serious challenge with the launch of Project Gizmo, the latest brainchild of Michael Robertson, the founder of MP3.com and Linspire.
The major difference between the two, lies in the fact that Project Gizmo has been built using an open source philosophy around the emerging SIP standards.
Project Gizmo IP telephony software is currently available in beta versions for Mac OSX, Microsoft Windows XP and Windows 2000 platforms, with a Linux version due for release in the next few months.

GigaOM : » Gizmo Project not that open after all
Gizmo Project has garnered some decent press and kudos from the VoIP blogger community.
The reason Gizmo accounts are set up with SIPphone (Gizmo’s creator), is that the voice compression codecs at the core are dramatically better when it is Gizmo to Gizmo calling, all the way down to a dialup connection.
It’s true the Gizmo software is not open source, there are licensing limitations which prevent that from happening, but to me that’s the least important component of creating a well functioning VOIP world where consumers avoid lock-in.

 Softphones Reviewed: Gizmo Project
Gizmo Project, launched in July 2005 by SIPphone, is a SIP-based VoIP service, the brain-child of Michael Robertson of Linspire and MP3.com fame.
Gizmo members purchase Call Out time in blocks of $10 or more, and their PSTN calling time is metered.
Our dominant impression of Gizmo Project is that it does more than other softphones (at least the ones we've reviewed so far) to broaden the reach of telephony, to take advantage of related computer-based technologies, and to embrace the 'open' spirit of the Internet.

 Gizmo Project and Bonjour
Aug 27, 2005 - 04:40 PM The new Gizmo Project, which is touted at http://www.gizmoproject.com as superior to Skype, adds a new Bonjour Service to the Windows XP (or Windows 2000, or Windows NT) Services folder.
What Bonjour does for Gizmo is it finds two or more Gizmo's that may be behind the same network and sets up a P2P connection to each other.
Because other applications may install the Bonjour Service, the Gizmo Project installer/uninstaller has to try to intelligently determine if Gizmo is the one installing it.
