Avalanche Lake in Glacier National Park : Hiking, Fishing and Pictures
Avalanche Lake is located in a cirque on the west side of the continental divide.
For those of you lucky enough to get to Avalanche Lake on a warm day soon after the trail opens in May, you will be treated to the sights and sounds of many avalanches, which is quite a sight if you have never seen one up close before.
The outlet of the lake, which is where the trail ends, receives a fair amount of fishing pressure by park standards.

 Glacier lake detection
Vegetation is in red, the moraine breach of the lake outburst and the corresponding outburst flood path is clearly recognizable.
In the case of moraine dams, the lake level in relation to the dam height determines the freeboard and thus relates to the risk of an upcoming outburst.
Dam width and height are deducible from standard photogrammetric procedures and have both implications for the stability of the dam and its vulnerability to overtopping and erosion by displacement waves from ice or rock falls.

 Ngozumpa
Glaciers in many parts of the Himalayas have undergone significant shrinkage in the last century in response to climatic warming, which in some areas is occurring faster than the global average.
This glacier is of particular interest because there are several supraglacial lakes on its ablation area, some of which are believed to lie close to the threshold for rapid lake growth.
Additionally, widespread subsidence of the glacier surface to the north of the lake, due to the collapse of englacial conduits, has resulted in the formation of a chain of new lakes, which are expected to join up with Spillway Lake in the near future.

Glacier Lake is up in the Beartooths, near the Hellroaring Plateau (it's windy, if you're wondering about the name).

On the far side, if some adventurous souls were willing to go further and bring some snowshoes and skis, a good, long run could be had, but the trip would probably take two days of hiking for one good run of skiing.
