Unlike the glaciers of northwestern Europe, which lie close to human settlements and have been observed for hundreds of years, those in the Pacific Northwest were not visited until the second half of the last century, and most had not been seen or studied before the early decades of the 20th century.
Glaciers fluctuate in size in response to changes in their climatic environment, and their yearly changes in mass (i.e., their annual mass balance) is determined primarily by the amount of winter snowfall and the amount of summer melting.
The reconstructed mass balance history of Nisqually Glacier is consistent with the over-all recessional trend of its terminus, for it shows a progressive long-term negative trend of mass balance, indicating progressive loss of mass by the glacier.

Field examination of this glacier in 1988, 1995 and 2002 by the North Cascade Glacier Climate Project, along with comparison of aerial photographs from Austin Post of the USGS from 1961,1964,1965,1967, 1970,1972, 1975 and 1979, were used to map the more recent changes in both glacier thickness and extent.
The south branch of the glacier is thin and stagnant in the lower 200 m.
A comparison of glacier surface elevation in 1983 and 2002 identifies the average thinning in the twenty year period from the USGS aerial photography in 1983 to 2002, for the northern branch is 15 m.

SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL VARIATIONS IN ANNUAL BALANCE OF  NORTH CASCADE GLACIERS
No single glacier is representative of all others; thus, to understand the causes and nature of changes in glacier mass balance throughout a mountain range it is necessary to monitor a significant number of glaciers (Fountain et al., 1991).
Glaciers monitored in both programs do not lose significant mass by calving or avalanching, so that changes observed are primarily a function of winter accumulation and summer ablation on the glacier’s surface.
In the North Cascades at the end of summer, the density of the previous winter’s snowpack that remains on a glacier is remarkably consistent (Pelto, 1996; Krimmel, 1998).

The planet's glacial landscape is "so uniquely beautiful that I feel I almost have an obligation to try to share it," Meier says of the highly sculptured formations he paints in subtle blue tones.

The glaciers there today "are more historic than dramatic," says University of Michigan geologist Henry Pollack, who has accom-panied tours there and in Antarctica since 1991.

Little Tahoma Peak: Whitman Glacier | Washington Climbs
Although Little Tahoma seems insignificant compared with its lofty neighbor, at least from a distance, it is in fact the third highest peak in Washington State.
It is moderately popular and involves relatively easy glacier climbing with just a bit of loose rock scrambling to the summit, although that little bit is very loose and very scary, so much so that the Mountaineers give credit for the climb even if you stop well short of the summit.
Because it involves glacier travel above 10,000 feet elevation, climbing Little Tahoma Peak requires a permit, which is available at the White River Ranger Station.
