Lituya Bay is a part of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.
The entrance of the bay is very narrow, and the tides going into and out of the bay through the entrance also cause very treacherous currents.
An earthquake and landslide in Crillon Inlet at the head of the bay on July 10, 1958 generated a monstrous megatsunami more than 500 m high, which stripped trees and soil from the opposite headland and consumed the entire bay, destroying three fishing boats anchored there and killing two people.

Washington, DC, Jun. 6 (UPI) -- Conservationists hailed a U.S. Supreme Court ruling giving the National Park Service ownership of submerged lands and tidelands in Alaska's Glacier Bay.
The conservation group had filed a friend-of-the-court brief against Alaska's claim saying increased boat traffic and commercial fishing would harm marine and mammal life, including humpback whales, in submerged areas of the 3.2 million acre park.
