Glacial fluctuations in Glacier National Park have been studied, with published reports dating back to 1914 and as recently as 1989 with USGS Bulletin 1902, by Paul Carrara, which summarized most of the glacial history for the park.
The National Park Service made measurements of glaciers at various times during the 1930-1940 period and independent research scientists, USGS scientists, and others have made similar measurements in the course of carrying out a large body of related research during the 1970s.
Additionally, glaciers are of inherent interest to park visitors because of the role glaciers played in shaping the landscape of present-day Glacier National Park.

Glacier National Park, one of the largest of the national parks in the lower 48 states at 1600 square miles (1,013,598 acres), is located in the northern section of Montana near the Canadian border.
Glacier provides a variety of diverse wildlife habitats, and as a result there are many different kinds of animals which can be viewed in the park.
The only road which crosses the park is the Going-to-the-Sun road which runs 52 miles from the east entrance at St. Mary across the continental divide to the west entrance at West Glacier.

Glacier National Park encompasses a relatively large mountainous region (4080 sq km) of northwestern Montana, bordering southern Alberta and British Columbia, Canada.
Stanton and Grant Glaciers, are nearest the Park and the largest, currently at approximately 0.37 sq km and 0.34 sq km, respectively (Figure 1).
While the portion of true glaciers has yet to be determined, it is definitely less than 26 sq km, the amount of ice and snow masses delineated on 1968 quadrangle maps that were greater than 0.1 sq km (including adjustments for 12 glaciers measured since 1968).

He concluded that the presence of a grizzly population in Yellowstone National Park was essential to (1) have representative natural equilibriums among associated secondary consumers; (2) maintain natural relationships between a variety of primary and secondary consumers; and (3) retain the scientific values of ecological systems with an intact native biota.
Management of the park as a natural area requires that the integrity of this population be preserved as an integral component of park ecosystems.
Characteristics of the park's grizzly population were studied from sightings of grizzlies by the author, park personnel, and others who were considered qualified observers.

The Granite Park Chalet is awesome, the chalet is beautiful and rustic and the people who man it are like your own private trail guides.
The next day we found the trail on the ridge and headed south to stay in the Granite Park Campground, the grizzly warnings were out in force (this being the same place that someone had been attacked by a grizzly years earlier.
