The Glacier Point Road survey was my introduction to the Sierra Mountains, and to employment with the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads, a job that was destined to last for 35 years.
From Wawona the road bears almost due north; at Chinquapin Ranger Station I again turned east on the Glacier Point Road and, after seven miles, finally came to the U.S.B.P.R. camp at Bridal Veil Creek.
We had all of our Glacier Point survey men except our cook, John Eichler, who got ranked by Ward's cook, Homer Cox; also Howard Wakefield had returned to school and we were using Melvin Olsen as stakeman.

I attended the SJAA public star party at Yosemite's Glacier Point, July 5-6, 2002.
I was planning to sleep in my minivan anyway (my loud snoring would have been intolerable to the other campers), but since there was no more room in any of the bear boxes for my food I decided to sleep in the Glacier Point parking lot.
Speaking of bears, I happened upon a couple of fl bears in the Glacier Point parking lot at about 5:30 a.m.

The original road to Glacier Point, built in 1882, was acquired by the Federal Government in 1917 along with the old Wawona Road, at which time tolls were abolished.
There are more than 20 glaciers and remnants of glaciers in the park, but all are located on the shaded, far sides of the high peaks.
The name Glacier Point comes from the fact that during the glacial period two trunk glaciers, one in Tenaya Canyon (left of Half Dome) and the other in Little Yosemite Valley (right of Half Dome) joined in one huge glacier rising some 700 feet above this point.

I just noticed that Glacier Point Apron is in the "Current Closures" section of the Yosemite web site.
OSHA doesn't regulate 3000 foot deep, naturally caused, glacial valley's but they do regulate 3 foot deep, man created, trenches containing water pipes.
I don’t know what the deal is with people on the road in the closed area, or if bikes are ok there.

Glacier point is about a mile higher than Yosemite Valley.

The last six miles or so is hilly, with a 4-5 mile hill going upward followed by a 2 mile very steep downhill to Glacier Point with a relatively flat 1.5 miles in between.
The steep downhill to Glacier Point is often icy and difficult, we had to carry our skies and walk up the hill because the tracks were so hard in the morning.
You can camp anywhere in the backcountry away from the valley rim, and not directly on Glacier Point at least four miles from a popular trailhead.
