Centurion tank - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prototypes of the original 40 ton design, the Centurion Mark I, had 76 mm of armour in the front glacis, thinner than the current infantry tank designs like the Churchill which had 101 mm, but the turret was extremely well armoured at 152 mm.
The uparmoured Centurion Mark II soon arrived, featuring a new 118 mm thick glacis and the sides and rear increased from 38 mm to 51 mm.

Angling armour plates greatly increases their effectiveness against projectiles, by increasing the effective perpendicular thickness of the armour, and by increasing the chance of deflection.
Thin plates of spaced armour, steel mesh "RPG screens", or rubber skirts, were found to cause HEAT rounds to detonate too far from the main armour, greatly reducing their penetrating power.
Infantry have been known to immobilise a tank using a set of plates covered with leaves and dirt, which may appear to be mines from the crew's obscured point of view, allowing them to attack the enemy while they stop to make new plans.

The bottom of the hull sponsons were now made with a downward sloping plate instead of the notch which had been at the rear of the previous designs.
The flank armor of the new design was not sloped as much as the earlier tanks, and was therefore thickened.

Early vehicles had muzzle brake installed but it was found that these were unnecessary and were removed from production in 1944.
Early models had the glacis plate extended and a compartment for the driver was made on the left side.
From early 1944 the crew compartment went all the way across the front and the radio operator was also placed in it.

Note also that the superstructure side has been cut off so as to view the now very rusty interior.
Above is photo of the right-rear of the Aberdeen Hetzer showing the jack bracket on the fender, the hand tool brackets on the hull side, the side skirt brackets, and a grab handle and commander’s periscope location on the rear plate.
The space between the fender and the superstructure above it is the location of the engine air intake.
