 Gladiator: Cinephiles Movie Review
Gladiator is directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise), and is written by David Franzoni, John Logan and William Nicholson, from a story by David Franzoni.
Gladiator, however, owes most of its success to its clever exploration of the notion of "spectatorship." By providing violent images of the gladiator games, the film portrays the Roman crowd's thirst for violence while simultaneously confronting the film's spectators with their appeal for screen violence.
All in all, Gladiator is a spectacular film that cleverly uses its poignant images and its powerful characters to create a dramatic story that speaks of the corruptibility of the human mind and the redeeming powers of love and justice.

The film's characterization accurately reflects Marcus Aurelius's reputation for wisdom, but its representation of Commodus is extremely watered down, as Commodus was far more insane and bloodthirsty than he appears in the film.
The film's depiction of Commodus's entry into Rome borrows imagery from Leni Riefenstahl's Nazi propoganda film Triumph of the Will (1934), although Ridley Scott has pointed out that the iconography of Nazi rallies was of course inspired by the Roman Empire.

 Movie Review - Gladiator (2000) - eFilmCritic
Gladiator is visually spectacular, and serves us a "history" of the Roman empire which is heavily laced with Shakespearean dialogue, dream-sequences, philosophical discussions of the afterlife, to make the film more palatable.
The philosophical discussions of the afterlife in the film are rather banal in that there is an assumption that all characters have the same supernatural convictions and religious beliefs.
Gladiator is a very gory film, for all those who say it is not, and though a bit of gore is expected, I don’t think that we need to use CG effects to see every spray of blood, every splash of sweat.

The battles were none too frequent either, your typical Gladiator fought, at most, about 3 times a year, so if you want to be precise, only a few hundred Gladiators could have died in any given year...
Unless of course, there was a combat festival like the kind shown in the movie (they were infrequent, but they did exist), that's when Gladiators start to die in big numbers, there was one combat festival in Ancient Rome in which 5,000 Gladitors died, but that is the exception and not the rule.
