The movie was accurate in its reflection of the class distinction in the stadium and the separate throne for the emperor.
From the slaves to the aristocrats to the conquerors to the conquered, it is all in Gladiator.
Based on the movie of Gladiator, the games were held because as the new emperor, Commodus, the son of Marcus Aurelius faced a conflict with the senate in the court, the senate did not believe in his ability to govern the land, and also Commodus wanted to gain popularity as a new emperor of Rome.

Ridley Scott's Gladiator is a bipolar movie, a spectacle that's against spectacles.
Gladiator is filled with blunt parallels to the trappings of modern-day fame and athletics: groupies envelope Maximus on his way to the bouts, the gladiators' training sessions resemble infield practice, the dungeons look like locker rooms, and so on.
Gladiator’s sword choreography lacks the dancing kind of athleticism that gives movies like this a reason to exist, and the big set-pieces are perfunctory, unfulfilling affairs.

Gladiator is Ridley Scott's attempt at an epic in the same vein as Braveheart.
Combine that with the length of the movie, a terribly slow pace, effects that are downright cheesy, and summer blockbusters just around the corner, and I do not see this doing quite the level of business many are predicting.

When you hear a movie is 2 1/2 hours long, you tend to wonder if maybe something could be cut from it.
Not "Gladiator." "Gladiator" is so tightly written (by David H. Franzoni, John Logan and William Nicholson), and so efficiently directed (by Ridley Scott), that not one of its 154 minutes seems excessive, padded or unnecessary.
Eventually, his traveling troupe of gladiators -- men who fight the "home team" in arenas, to the death, for the amusement of the masses -- winds up in Rome, where Commodus sees him in action and must face up to the fact that 1) he's still alive, and 2) the people love him.

 Gladiator: Cinephiles Movie Review
Gladiator is directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise), and is written by David Franzoni, John Logan and William Nicholson, from a story by David Franzoni.
Gladiator, however, owes most of its success to its clever exploration of the notion of "spectatorship." By providing violent images of the gladiator games, the film portrays the Roman crowd's thirst for violence while simultaneously confronting the film's spectators with their appeal for screen violence.
All in all, Gladiator is a spectacular film that cleverly uses its poignant images and its powerful characters to create a dramatic story that speaks of the corruptibility of the human mind and the redeeming powers of love and justice.

Gladiator is a genre of movie upon which Hollywood once used to build its reputation but rarely produces anymore: the spectacle.
Perhaps Scott’s greatest achievement with Gladiator is neither keeping the pacing of a 2 1/2 hour movie tight nor choreographing a spectacular battle scene, but creating a second-century Rome that is entirely credible and stunning in its detail.

While not as fluid as the computer work done for, say, Titanic, it's an impressive achievement that will leave you marveling at the glory that was Rome, when you're not marveling at the glory that is Russell Crowe.
Starring as the heroic general Maximus, Crowe firmly cements his star status both in terms of screen presence and acting chops, carrying the film on his decidedly non-computer-generated shoulders as he goes from brave general to wounded fugitive to stoic slave to gladiator hero.
Gladiator's plot is a whirlwind of faux-Shakespearean machinations of death, betrayal, power plays, and secret identities (with lots of faux-Shakespearean dialogue ladled on to keep the proceedings appropriately "classical"), but it's all briskly shot, edited, and paced with a contemporary sensibility.

Gladiator Movie Review by Anthony Leong from MediaCircus.net
Though the story is largely fictional, "Gladiator" uses actual historical figures and tells its story in the context of the events of the day.
The games are portrayed as the low-brown entertainment of the age, where the top gladiators become worshipped by the masses (as well as become sought after for sexual favors) and the coffers of their owners are lined with gold.
As the film's titular gladiator, Crowe carries the story, both with his impassioned performance and commanding screen presence-- as he was able to embody the nervous mannerisms of whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand in "The Insider", Crowe is able to project the self-assuredness, leadership, and burning rage that dominate his character.

Gladiator tells the story of a Roman general named Maximus--what else?--who at the beginning of the film conquers Germania for Marcus Aurelius (121-80 CE).
In the role of Lucilla, Connie Nielsen is quite attractive and has a lovely face, but the movie gives her little to do other than to stand around decoratively and serve as the object of her driveling brother's unholy passion.

It's not 'Spartacus' or one of my all-time favorites Hawks' 'Land of the Pharaoh', but Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator' is grounded in the 1950's DeMille tradition of epic, overblown filmmaking, and is far more interesting than a good number of those '50's clunkers that they used to re-show on Saturday afternoons.

Gladiator movie review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The movie is quite daring in its own way: it is a spectacle set in Ancient Rome in 180 AD, a time when humans (being the inane creatures they are) more openly compensated for their inadequacies by watching other humans kill each other brutally.
Commodus does not take this news kindly and orchestrates events such that in a short order, Maximus' wife and son are killed brutally and Maximus himself is broken and shackled as a slave.
The spectacles being staged, from the initial opening sequence to the gladiator fights, are grandiose.
