Lacking confidence in their singing abilities, Gladys Horton and Georgia Dobbins formed the Casinyets (or "can't sing yets") in their hometown, Inkster, Michigan, with backing vocalists Georgeanna Tillman, Juanita Cowart, and Katherine Anderson.
After leaving the band, Georgeanna Tillman married Billy Gordon (of The Contours), but remained gravely ill until her death in 1980 due to complications of sickle cell anemia.
Gladys Horton tried to rally the surviving members and reform the group in 1986, but no one was interested.

Most of the early hits were delivered by Gladys Horton, and they had a brief mid-decade renaissance when Smokey Robinson started writing songs expressly for Wanda Young, but by 1970 the hits had run out and Motown pulled the plug.
The title track (a hit single co-written by Horton) was Cowart's last recording with the group.
Horton and Rogers apparently ended up with the band name, and cut this disc of remakes ("Don't Mess With Bill," "Beechwood 45-789") plus a batch of new songs co-written by producer Ian Levine ("Used To Be A Playboy").

The group was formed by Gladys Horton and others at Inkster High School in Inkster, Michigan [a suburb of Detroit] in the early 60's, and chose as the group name the "Casinyets," a contraction of "can't sing yet." The original group members were Horton, Georgeanna Marie Tillman, Katherine Anderson, Juanita Cowart and Georgia Dobbins.
Young and Horton both served as lead singers, making the Marvelettes different from other groups in that they had two outstanding lead singers.

Later, the Andantes did all the backgrounds for all the girl group recordings at Motown and the sound was much sweeter for better or worse.
