Throughout her career as a public servant, Gladys Noon Spellman successfully spearheaded many efforts to effect social and political reform in all facets of life for her native Prince George's County, for the State of Maryland, and for the nation.
In 1974, Spellman was elected to the U.S. Congress.
Representative Spellman was instrumental in sponsoring legislation to prevent discrimination based on marital status and prohibit discrimination against the handicapped and the elderly.

Gladys Noon Spellman Elementary School is located about five miles from Washington, D.C., in the socio-economically and racially diverse community of Cheverly in Prince George?s County, Md. The recently renovated split-level stucco and brick building is nestled into the crest of a hill.
Principal Lopez, came to Spellman in the fall of 1998 bringing a knowledge of Spellman?s success and history due to her work in the school as a district-level community instructional specialist.

It is one of the few cities in Prince George's County that has its own police force.
The town is almost exclusively residential, and has three schools within its borders: Gladys Noon Spellman Elementary, Judith P. Hoyer Early Childhood Center, and St. Ambrose Catholic School.
There is a Washington Metro station in the southern part of Cheverly, on Columbia Park Road.

The Baltimore-Washington Parkway was ceremonially renamed after Gladys Spellman upon her death in 1988.
Spellman was an educator for many years in the Prince Georges County school system and chaired the National Mental Health Study Center.
In 1962, she became the first woman elected to the county's Board of Commissioners, and later she chaired that body.

Spellman fell into a deep and irreversible coma on October 21, 1980, while campaigning for re-election, and she was voted in by the people of her district in Maryland.

Because it is a small care center attached to a larger acute center, it is able to provide medically complicated patients immediate emergency room admittance, lab and radiology procedures, and continuous services for long periods of time.
