Uniqueness in the heart of Europe - Glagolitic Script
For all the Slavs the common legacy bequeathed them by St.Cyril and Methodius was the right to celebrate Mass and conduct all church services in their own tongue, while the rest of the world retained the Latin services until the Vatican II.
In its conception and as a linguistic tool, glagolitic script was an amazing achievement – a tool to give power of the written word to half the Europe.
It was also a powerful demonstration of the effective use of the native language in spreading a new religion and a new concept of the world.

Istria on the Internet - Linguistics - Glagolitic
Although the Latin holds the chief place among the liturgical languages in which the Mass is celebrated and the praise of God recited in the Divine Offices, yet the Slavonic language comes next to it among the languages widely used throughout the world in the liturgy of the Church.
Thus the Roman Mass was translated into the Slavonic, and, in order to more fully distinguish the Western Rite from the Eastern Rite among the Slavic peoples, the use of the Glagolitic alphabet was reserved exclusively for the service books of the Roman Rite, just as the Cyrillic was used for the Greek Rite.
At present the Slavonic language for the Roman Rite, printed in Glagolitic characters, is used in the Slavic churches of the Dioceses of Zengg, Veglia, Zara, and Spalato, and also by the Franciscans in their three churches in Veglia, one in Cherso, two in Zara, and one in Sebenico.

 Leos Janacek
The term ‘Glagolitic’ refers to the original script in which Old Church Slavonic was written.
The Mass is peppered with Janáček’s customary traits; use of repeated motives (Sir Charles Mackerras is recently quoted as saying that he was the first minimalist composer), short bursts of lyricism and bizarre, often surprising groupings of instruments within the orchestra.
The Glagolitic Mass is a triumphant work (quite apart from Janáček’s thoughts on religion) and much like his opera The Cunning Little Vixen celebrates life overcoming death.

Instead of setting the mass in Latin, as is the fashion and which he himself considered in 1908, Janáček instead decided to look far back into his country’s history and set the mass in Old Church Slavonic.
Not only did Janáček piece together the work from two imperfect attempts at getting to an OCS mass, but in the process of revising the music he would write out the text from memory and fail to check it against the source.
A scholar, Miloš Weingart, attempted to correct the text in 1928, but he felt he had to omit the nasal vowels, thinking them too difficult for singers, and had to leave out the missing jers lest he add a hundred extra syllables to the work.
