Glanis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-29)
Glanis was a Gaulish god associated with a healing spring at the town of Glanum in the Alpilles mountains of Provence in southern France.
The town, where a shrine to Glanis was erected in the 4th century BC, was itself named after the god.
The worship of Glanis ended with the rise of Christianity and the destruction of Glanum in 270 AD.

Silurus Glanis - by Michele Poggi
To single out the optimum position to make an attempt on a silurus glanis, either hunting from the banks or from a boat, requires a great experience and knowledge of the river depth conformation, which changes day by day.
A great number of silurus glanis of many sizes, lives and settles during the year in this stretch of the river Po, situated in the surrounding of the Isola Serafini hydroelectric power plant.
Two strategic zones came out to be the tip of the stone barrier, which allows to fish on the top of the stream and centre of the whirlpool.

With a View to Fisheries - Catfish, the basics
In freshwater the catfish's size is only surpassed by that of the white sturgeon (Huso Huso) which may attain weights of 2,200lb, however, the sturgeon is not regarded as a freshwater fish as most of its life is spent at sea.
Catfish are especially suited to the slow-flowing reaches of the larger rivers and lakes especially with dense weed-beds and muddy bottoms.
Silurus glanis is important in the food industry of certain countries and there is potential for this to be true in the UK.

Nothwithstanding their great morphological similarity, they differ remarkably in their habits, for the wels takes no care of its eggs, while the male of the glanis exercises paternal supervision for a prolonged period.
One further assumption apparently was that because the glanis was not in a European museum it could not be a distinct species, and another that the American authors were incompetent to determine the species.
It might be thought that related species would agree at least in the character of their eggs and oviposition, but exceptions to this also occur.

 Paramètres hématologiques de Silurus glanis
The non availability of haematological baseline values could be one of the reasons why health fish monitoring according to their haematological parameters is not a current practise.
This is especially true for the sheatfish (Silurus glanis), for which the baseline values are unknown.
The aim of this paper was to present the results from three observation series carried out on juvenile sheatfish in order to determine the plasmatic baseline values of Na, Cl, glucose, osmolarity, haematocrite, leucocrite and lysozyme.

The dog which was said to be eaten by a wels, was a little Dachshund, it would not be impossible that a larger wels could eat such a small dog, they eat ducks, rats and larger fish too.

I investigated the interaction of piscivorous European catfish (Silurus glanis) and burbot (Lota lota) with several species of prey fish in the absence of visible light as well as the prey’s reaction to perceived risk of predation.
European catfish (Silurus glanis) were found to employ a hitherto unknown predation technique to locate swimming piscine prey (guppy; Poecilia reticulata and dace, Leuciscus leuciscus): they were accurately tracking their prey’s three-dimensional swim path prior to an attack.
Wakes that were up to 10 s old were followed over distances up to 55 prey body lengths in the experimental setup.

 All words on Glanum
It was situated about 20 km (12 miles) south of the modern city of Avignon, and is just south of the town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
The city, founded by Celto-Ligurians and subsequently Hellenised, was already old when it became a Romanised settlement in the first century BCE; a shrine to the Celtic god Glanis, who was associated with a local healing spring, had been erected on the site in the 4th century BC.
The Romans adopted the shrine and the divinity, naming the town after Glanis, and also adopted a triad of local mother-gods whom they termed the Glanicae.
