Glanum was a Roman city in Provence, southern France, on the flanks of the Alpilles range of mountains in today's Bouches-du-Rhone départment.
Glanum was destroyed by the Alemans in 260 and was subsequently abandoned, its inhabitants moving a few miles north into the plain to found a city that later was named Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
Glanum was not excavated until 1921, but has since become one of the most important Roman excavations in France.

Paganism in Provence - Vincent Bridges
Glanum's authority throughout Liguria depended on its closeness with the shamanic priesthood at Les Baux and in the Valley of the Ancients at Cordes.
Glanum also echoes this arrangement of sacred mountain, grottos and springs, and The Goddess of the Springs remains a vital element in the folk life of the region, although for the most part completely subsumed into a Christian framework.
Glanum disappeared at the beginning of the fourth century, and, while Arles retained its importance into the late medieval era, the significance of the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, faded into the background of folk tradition.

Since archaeological excavations began only in 1921, van Gogh was unaware of the then-buried central part of Glanum, but he would have been familiar with two monuments on the outskirts of the ancient city, an honorary arch and an imposing mausoleum, which have been continuously visible since their erection some two millennia ago.
Glanum's arch and mausoleum survived the city's destruction and have been visible since antiquity.
Glanum was largely abandoned after its destruction during Germanic invasions about A.D. 270, and was succeeded by a new town a few miles to the north, which became St.-Rémy.

Vincent Bridges » Empire of the Sun: Ancient Mysteries of Nostradamus
Nestled in a narrow valley to the north of the Ligurians’ sacred mountain stood the ancient capital of Liguria, the Celto-Greek city of Glanon, Romanized as Glanum Livii.
While camped at Glanum, Clovis experienced a miraculous visitation from his mentor, St. Remy, who prophesied for Clovis the future of his dynasty -”The Kingdom of France is predestined by God for the defense of the… only true Church of Christ.
From the Druid Seers of Les Baux, the philosophers and early Christians of Glanum, to the Merovingians origins of St. Remy, the Magi of Les Baux, the Cathars, the Kabbalah, the Templars and the legends of the Grail, Nostradamus’ vision rested on a solid basis of local myth and tradition.

The Underground Stream and Fulcanelli's Message
Lost for almost 1700 years -- Glanum disappeared from history in the generation after 270 CE and was not rediscovered until 1921 -- this ancient city holds the key to the "underground stream," the hidden mysteries of western esotericism.
Michael Nostradamus, the justly famous Seer of Provence, was born barely a mile from the Arch and the "pyramid," as the Augustinian mausoleum was called in the 16th century.
Perhaps Nostradamus foresaw the rediscovery of Glanum, full of Roman and Gallo-Greek treasures, in 1921, or perhaps the Seer of Provence was pointing to the secret of the western tradition, the holy grail of esotericism, still waiting to be discovered among it ruins.

 Nostradamus
Glanum, an important Gallo -Greek center later to become the sacred Gallo Roman town of the goddess  Valetudo, was built on the remains of the former capital of the Salians, a Celto-Ligurian people, and was founded over 2500 years ago.
Nostradamus predicted the discovery of treasures near the monuments.Over the centuries, particularly after torrential rain, precious objects and coins were found around the present day site of Glanum (whose location had been forgotten for several centuries).
The mausoleum seems to date from around 30-40 B.C. This work of architectural art is 18 meters high and is remarkably well preserved for a building that has no foundations no mortar to hold the stones together.

I am debating between staying at Villa Glanum or Les Mas de Carassins during my March trip to the Saint Remy area (with husband and teenaged daughter for 3 days), and would appreciate any input from travellers who have stayed at either of these places.
Villa Glanum is quite a bit cheaper (42 euros/night--a special following its closure for renovation)--but I wonder if the low price is a reflection of the quality of the place, or just a great deal.
If Villa Glanum is out by Glanum itself you'll be some distance from St-Rémy itself.
