Glaser Safety Slug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glaser Safety Slug, Inc. is a small American ammunition company based in Sturgis, South Dakota (the same location as Cor-Bon).
The Glaser Safety Slug, a frangible bullet, is the company's most well-known product.
The company was founded in 1975, the same year as the Glaser Safety Slug was developed by Jack Canon and Armin Glaser.

 Frangible Ammunition
Some, like the well-publicized Glaser Safety Slug, are hollowpoint rounds that are filled with tiny metal beads.
Glaser Safety Slug, Inc. developed the first frangible bullet in 1974 to provide reduced ricochet and over-penetration danger with improved stopping power over conventional bullets.
Lead is tainting grounds and water, and is being ingested by wildlife, and has thus become a serious threat to the health and safety of human and animal populations.

Bullet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term 'bullet' refers specifically to the metal slug that is propelled from a firearm.
The word "bullet" is often incorrectly used to refer to the combination of bullet, case, gunpowder and primer; such an item is correctly called a cartridge.
Frangible: Designed to disintegrate into tiny particles upon impact to minimize their penetration for reasons of range safety, to limit environmental impact, or to limit the danger behind the intended target.

TechIMO Forums - House votes to allow guns in cockpit
July 11th, 2002 08:32 AM The Glaser safety slug is already on the market for home defense.
They were convinced that the GLASER had the most effective stopping power at close range, with the least likely hood of structural damage.
Glaser is an excellent choice for any situation where there are a large number of people; where the danger of a ricochet hitting someone is great; or when a bullet passing through interior walls is a concern.

The AnarchAngel: Basic Ammo Questions - Part 1
Glaser safety slugs, and the similar MagSafe and BeeSafe rounds are technically, prefragmented composite ammunition.
I do not recommend Glasers as general carry ammunition unless you are able to acquire a large quantity of them (at least 100, and preferabely 250 to 500), so you can obtain adequate practice with them in your guns.
Now, I DO recommend that all bedside revolvers default load be glasers or something similar, because they are very effective at household ranges, there is minimal risk of damaging over penetration, and you don't have to worry about feeding and function in a revolver.

The Glaser has a pre-fragmented core of compressed number twelve shot (a core of number six shot is also available), capped by a soft plastic ball, inside a bullet jacket.
The Glaser Safety Slug tested uses an eighty grain bullet rated at +P velocity and pressure, and chronographed at an average of 1268 feet-per-second from the short one and seven-eighths inch barrel of the Smith.
The idea behind the Glaser is a slug that will dump all of its energy quickly into the target, without excessive penetration of the target.

The best reason I've seen for someone using Glasers or MagSafes or any other prefragmented ammo is that they're supposed to break up in sheetrock, so are good for apartment dwellers or zero-lotline homeowners who don't want to hit their neighbors.
Glasers penetrate fewer walls than conventional bullets, but they're still potentially deadly after going through 1 or 2 walls, and are still an eye hazard after the third wall.
The lungs are relatively important, but a Glaser would probably only take out one, and a person or animal can live on the other for quite a long time.

Due to the much reduced penetration in flesh, some have theorized that the Glaser would be ideal where over-penetration of a projectile could be hazardous to bystanders.
For instance, the Glaser may be stopped by a muscular or upraised arm.
However, for the same reasons, the Glaser's terminal performance can vary dramaticly, producing impressive successes and equally spectacular failures depending on the angle at which the target is struck.

As for gelatin penetration the main reason ballistic gellatin is used is because a hollow point bullet fired into it ends up expanding in a similar manner as the same bullet expanded in flesh.
Since I almost always practice pairs in a defensive scenario, the Glaser would be followed by a standard HP a split second later anyway for penetration.
When selecting the load, a very high priority was lack of barrier penetration as we had one child (at the time) and well, that's the last thing I wanted to worry about though I obviously still wouldn't want to shoot the bad guy with her wall just behind him.

 Air Marshals in Training
Sometimes designated "frangible" or "pre-fragmented," Glaser Safety Slugs were the first widely available cartridges of this type.
In 1987 Glaser substituted a ball for the disc, thus creating a round nosed bullet which would feed more reliably in autos.
To be most effective, ammunition such as the Glaser or MagSafe must have enough penetration to get into the body of the target and destroy a lot of tissue, yet not overpenetrate.

Consequently, the Glaser rounds are particularly suitable for use in small concealed carry guns to increase their effectiveness, and for home defense, where a missed shot will not kill a family member in the next room.
The biggest weakness of the Glaser round is that it often does not penetrate far enough to be effective.
Like the Glaser, the bullet weights are light for the caliber, while the velocities and energies are extremely high.

Okay; I just thought safety was your number one concern, and lead-free was a distant number two.
Considering the cost of Glasers (~$25.00 for six rounds) you wouldn't be using them much for range practice but only when the chips are down (and presumably lead poisoning is the least of your worries), so I thought they were worth mentioning.
