Before the 1983 general election, the area lay in the Berwick and East Lothian constituency.

The Speaker of the House of Commons is an MP and has to stand for re-election in his or her constituency at every general election.
The Speaker is a neutral figure in Parliament, so Mr Martin is no longer a member of the Labour Party as he was before his election to the role (by all the other MPs).
For example, in the last election, the swing across the UK, excluding Northern Ireland, was 1.8% from Labour to the Conservatives.

Anyone who represents a rural constituency will know that there is a great deal more travelling and logistical difficulty in representing a rural seat than in representing an urban seat.
At the moment, many of the electorates in Glasgow and other west of Scotland seats are smaller than some in the highlands of the north-east.
The Government gave a commitment in the White Paper that there should be separate constituency Members for the Orkney islands and the Shetland islands and that the present UK Parliament constituency would be split for that purpose.

The periodic changes to parliamentary constituencies south of the border are on their way, but will not occur until the election 2009/10 so for now the number of seats in the Commons will be reduced from 659 to 646, with the figure required for an overall majority falling to 324 seats.
The Boundary Commission of Scotland's work in reducing the number of constituencies now means that electorates in most seats have increased to the average size of electorates in England, at least for the time being, and goes someway to answering the critics who point to Scotland's disproportionate presence in the UK Parliament.
Some sitting Members of Parliament, faced with the prospect of a contest with parliamentary colleagues to become the party's candidate in a new seat, decided that discretion was the better part of valour' and chose to stand down.

There is no law that there should be clubs for our disabled people or our elderly, and yet every day, in every district, men and women volunteer to run those clubs so that their friends and neighbours can have a better quality of life.

It’s always good to meet visitors to Parliament, and it continues to intrigue me how many people arrive with quite firm pre-conceptions about the place and the MPs who work there, only to leave with a completely different perspective on Parliament and its workings.
It’s unfortunate that for obvious geographical reasons, it’s not as easy for my constituents to visit Westminster as it is for people who live in the south of England, but I am always happy to show constituents around or to arrange a tour if I’m not available personally.
Of course, we currently have a Scottish Speaker of the House in Michael Martin, the MP for Glasgow North East, and it was certainly quite an occasion in the ornate surroundings of the dining room of the Speaker’s House in the Palace of Westminster.
