In 2003, Shinty clubs voted for a trial period of two years of a Summer Season starting in March until October, with a view to moving permanently to Summer Shinty if the experiment was adjudged to be a success.
University Shinty is also a popular section of the sport, with almost all Scotland's main universities possessing a team.
Shinty is also spreading to North America, though originally played in the 18th and 19th century by Scottish immigrants, the sport died out, however it is enjoying a revival.

This club is the successor to the University of Aberdeen side which continued in the senior leagues with the advent of summer shinty in 2004.
The club has risen to prominence partly thorugh the presence of Glenurquhart Shinty Club's John Barr who made RGU a tough proposition for any team, especially in Aberdeen, and of course with when they have their chief goal machine fit and sober Gordy Boy.
University of Abertay Dundee have the distinction of having won every Littlejohn they have competed in, having only competed in one to this point in 2003 defeating Glasgow University in the final 2-1.

In common with other sports, shinty moved out of a long previous history of unwritten rules and widely differing local variations in the last quarter of the nineteenth century.
The Glasgow Celtic Society has continued to operate the oldest competition of all in the South Clubs with the MacTavish Cup, established in 1898, as the equivalent for North clubs.

 Dundee University Sports Union: Clubs
This is the Hurling Club’s third year as a Sports Union Club at University of Dundee, but we have already made quite an impact.
Even though the club is in its infancy it is well established and successful, and enjoyed the sponsorship of O Neills last year.
It is hoped that the following Universities will compete in the 2006/2007 University Hurling competitions, at least in th 7-a-side tournaments: Aberdeen University, University of Abertay, Heriot Watt University, Glasgow University, Robert Gordon University, University of Dundee and Napier University.

The difference between those previous fixtures and the 2004 initiative is that the latter is founded upon a now established infrastructure of university club hurling and the uptake of hurling in the universities in Britain, but particularly in Scotland.
The University of Abertay have entered their hurlers into the shinty leagues and competitions and, in fact, in their inaugural season 2002/2003 these Irish lads won the Scottish university shinty cup, The Littlejohn Vase.
This fixture is therefore written into the British Universities Hurling Calendar and provides an ideal opportunity for British Universities hurling to acknowledge the talent in the form of the best combined team which we describe as the University Hurling All Stars playing a Scottish University Shinty Select.

After their fantastic success in the university league this year, Strathclyde went into the Littlejohn Vase brimming with confidence that they could triumph over all other uni's for a second time this year.
After a tough game versus St Andrews and a goalless draw against Glasgow in the group stages, Strathclyde proceeded to record a win over Dundee, the only team to have beaten them this year, in the semi-finals.
A convincing 4-0 mauling over Robert Gordon's University in the final ensured that there would only be the name "Strathclyde" on the trophy this year.

Strangely enough, these two teams only met in the Camanachd Cup Final for the first time in 1984.
The 2005 Final saw Fort William rivals, Fort William and Kilmallie clash at An Aird in Fort William; a passionate local derby saw Fort William win the cup for only the second time in their history by defeating their neighbours 3-2, thanks to a last minute goal.
There are also clubs forming in Houston, Texas, Santa Monica (California), Seattle and Washington.
