Glass Harp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glass Harp is a Youngstown, Ohio based power trio consisting of guitarist Phil Keaggy, drummer John Sferra and bassist Daniel Pecchio.
Glass Harp was especially popular at the legendary JB's in Kent, OH, playing to packed houses during the volatile days surrounding the anti-war demonstrations at Kent State University.
While Glass Harp could be very at home with the prog rock bands of the era, they were in fact one of the pioneers of what would later be known as the jam rock genre, with songs many times reaching over 30 minutes in length with extended solo passages and group improvisation.

Glass Harp developed a signature progressive sound that allowed the members, collectively and individually, to stretch beyond the confines of standard form; breaks in songs for guitar, bass, flute, and drum solos were de riguere, as extended improvisations that would take the bands performances into the late hours.
Combined with the tasteful, rhythmic bass lines of Daniel Pecchio and the sharp, assertive drumming of John Sferra, Glass Harp created a wall of sound that thrilled sell-out crowds across the upper Midwest and beyond.

 Glass Harp Music: School Performances
Learn all about Musical Glasses, or the Glass Harp- a musical instrument that is a collection of drinking glasses, each chosen for their pitch or musical note.
Glasses can be played by wetting ones fingers and carefully rubbing the rims of the glasses, using friction to make music.
NOTE: Benjamin Franklin's armonica took musical glasses a step further: He had glasses custom-built for him in exact pitches and sizes, with no stems (so they ended up resembling a progression of smaller and smaller bowls), and a hole in the center bottoms for a spindle to go through.

 Peter Bennett - Glass Harper
Almost any relatively thin-walled glass will produce the tone, but a stemmed glass is better since the foot of the glass has no part in tone production and therefore can be used to steady the glass and hold it down.
The point is any grease or oil on the fingers will lubricate and therefore defeat the "stick-slip" action of fingers on glass that creates the initial "squeak" which then becomes a sustained musical tone with continuing finger motion around the rim of the glass.
Various approaches have been used including tieing the feet of the glasses to the base with elastic (such as "bungee" cord or stretched rubber balloons -- simple rubber bands are not strong enough to hold them securely) or more elaborate schemes such as epoxy gluing the glasses down.
