Glassblowing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While the first evidence of man-made glass occurs in Mesopotamia in the Late-Third/Early-Second Millennium BCE, the actual "blowing" of glass using a tube did not occur until sometime between 27 BC and AD 14 in Syria.
The modern torch permits working both the soft glass from the furnace worker and the borosilicate glass (low-expansion) of the scientific glassblower who may have multiple headed torches and special lathes to help form the glass or fused quartz used for special projects.
The molten glass is attached to a stainless steel or iron rod called a punty (or a punty rod, or a pontil) for shaping and transferring a hollow piece from the blowpipe for opening.

Glassblowing -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Glassblowing is the process of forming (A brittle transparent solid with irregular atomic structure) glass into useful shapes while the glass is in a molten, semi-liquid state.
This advancement transformed the material's usefulness from a time-consuming process in which the medium was hot-formed around rough cores of mud and dung into a mass-producible material which could be quickly inflated into large, leakproof vessels.
Traditionally, the glass was melted in furnaces from the raw ingredients of (A loose material consisting of grains of rock or coral) sand, (A sedimentary rock consisting mainly of calcium that was deposited by the remains of marine animals) limestone, soda, potash and other compounds.

Making and working with Glass, from the Glass Encyclopedia
There are many forms of working with glass, some requiring large expensive furnaces and cooling ovens (for glass blowing) whilst others need only a blow torch (for lampworking) or small kiln (for slumped glass).
It was the Romans who discovered that the fluid property of glass as it cools makes it possible to blow a bubble into the glass and create a vessel.
Glass stays flexible as it cools and can be manipulated by blowing a bubble into it, or pulling it around to make various shapes before it cools and becomes a "super cooled liquid".

The glass blowing world of Kent
Adding more glass a little at a time is called gathering, Mercer said, and glass on the pipe can be reheated by sticking it into glory holes, hot circular oven-like areas.
Blowing glass "doesn't take a lot of pressure," Mercer said, explaining that the pressure of heat combined with the air causes the glass to expand.
Glass takes about a day to harden in an annealing oven, depending on how thick the glass is, Mercer said.

 Glossary of Blown Glass Objects
A drinking glass with a heavy base, often a disk extending beyond the base of the glass, presumed to be named from the sound of banging (firing) the glass on the table in celebration.
However, a glass ladle for a punch bowl seems almost required and glass ladles for gravy are rather common, matched to a gravy boat (sauce boat) Ladles in glass are usually a flat curved handle dropping down to a hemispherical bowl with the rim perpendicular to the handle.
When glass is incorporated, it may be as minor decorations on the shaft, as a frosted bowl to diffuse the glass, as a shade, or in the column of the lamp as decoration.

Glass Blowing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Pipe and glass are removed from the furnace, and by blowing thru the pipe the ball of molten glass is expanded into a thick bubble.
The bubble of hot glass is then worked, that is, formed by using practically anything that will not be too badly burned by the hot glass: wet sticks, wooden molds, pliers, scissors, wire, and so forth.
This permits the part of the glass that was in contact with the blow pipe to be opened up to form the mouth of a vase or bowl, for instance.

A Brief History of Glass Blowing
All that is required to make glass is a little sand, a little soda, a little lime and a lot of heat.
Suddenly the time-consuming handcrafting that all glass had required was no longer necessary and nearly everything around the home began to be made of glass.
In 1962 Harvery Littleton reversed this decline of art glass by discovering that some glass could be melted at a low enough temperature to allow the use of small home-studio furnaces.

Blowing Glass   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The basic procedure is that glass material is heated on the end of a tube, and the glassblower blows through the end close to his/her body (the near end) of the tube to make a bubble in the blob of glass.
The basics are to heat the glass until it softens sufficiently that it can be bent, or "blown" in much the same way you would blow bubbles with a soda straw.
Because most all glass contains sodium ions which emit intense yellow light it is necessary to wear special glasses both to see the glass inside the intense light and to protect the eyes which can be harmed by the intense sodium emission.
