Topic: Glauce

In the News (Fri 10 Oct 08)

 [No title]
Glauce is named in this passage as the \'d2ag\'8fd nurse\'d3 (49.4) an image which makes her particularly crone-like; this associates her with typical images of witches.
Glauce then tells Britomart \'d2spit upon my face,/ spit thrice upon me, thrice upon me spit\'d3 (50.6-8); not only is she commanded to repeat the action three times, the command is given three times with only slight variations in phrasing.
Glauce is not a villainous character, she seems at worst primitive and ignorant, but in this scene her actions are wrong because they are working towards a foolish purpose and in an idle manner.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Medea at Epinions.com
Glauce encourages Jason to send Medea (Kirsten Olesen) and her children into exile, and King Creon, with no resistance from Jason, seeks to enforce the decree.
When Jason and Glauce perform their nuptial rites (a scene using shadow play and silhouette to awesome effect), adjacent shots of Medea in her hovel, growing increasingly mad, suggest that she is magically aware of the betrayal as it happens.
For example, we do not see Glauce in her death throes; instead, in one of the movie’s many standout tableaux, a horse who has been pricked by the crown storms out of the stables and runs full tilt on the beach in a panic.

On a Monday in the spring of 1990, Glauce, a twenty-six year old Australian school teacher, wife of Creon and mother of his children was reported missing from a modest house in the Western suburbs of Sydney.[[3]] The last call that Glauce had received was from her husband's sister, Medea.
Glauce wanted to divorce Creon and was on her way to an appointment with a solicitor when Medea phoned asking her to come by to read a letter for her.
Glauce sat on a kitchen chair and Medea put a rope around her neck and tried to choke her, without success.

Stories from the Fairie Queene: The Legend of Britomart: How Britomart went to the Cave of the Magician Merlin
After that, Glaucé tried every way she could think of to cure Britomart's grief; but neither medicine, nor charms, nor good advice did her any good, and the nurse began to fear the King would be very angry with her when he heard what had happened to his dear daughter.
Then Glaucé told him that for the last three months some strange malady had taken hold of the young maiden; what it was, or whence it sprang, she knew not, but this she knew, that if a remedy were not found, she would soon see her dead.
Glaucé was rather taken aback at hearing these words, and vet she was unwilling to let her purpose appear plainly.

He hopes to advance his station by remarrying with Glauce, the daughter of Creon, king of Corinth, the Greek city where the play is set.
Ostensibly, the gifts are meant to convince Glauce to ask her father to allow the children to stay in Corinth.
Jason is left cursing his lot; his hope of advancing his station by abandoning Medea and marrying Glauce, the conflict which opened the play, has been annihilated, and everything he values has been lost through the deaths that conclude the tragedy.

Food and drink are passed around most generously, the men brag of their skills and tell stories of their battles, and the women laugh at them, trading stories of their own.
Jason accepts his accolades merrily, pours wine with a flourish, and Glauce beside him is as gracious as the King of Corinth's daughter should be.
Glauce looks down at the dead, and up at the husband who has not acknowledged them, and into Medea's face.

 SparkNotes: Medea: Characters
Hoping to advance his station through this second marriage, he only fuels Medea to a revenge that includes the deaths of his new bride, her father, and his children.
Although a minor character, Creon's suicidal embrace of his dying daughter provides one of the play's most dramatic moments, and his sentence against Medea lends an urgency to her plans for revenge.
His appearance marks a turning point in the play, for Medea moves from being a passive victim to an aggressor after she secures his promise of sanctuary.

Stories from the Fairie Queene: The Legend of Britomart: How Britomart set forth on her Quest
It would be easy for Britomart to do this, for she was tall and strong, and needed nothing but a little practice to render her skilful in the use of spear and sword.
Glaucé, remembering this, led Britomart there late one evening, and, taking down the armour, dressed her in it.
When Glaucé had dressed the maiden she took another suit of armour, and put it on herself, so that she could go forth with her young mistress and attend her carefully as her squire.

Medea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Corinth, according to ancient historian Didimos, the Corinthian King Creon convinced Jason to desert Medea for Glauce, Creon's daughter.
Alternatively, Jason is sometimes said to have married Glauce of his own volition, whereupon the enraged Medea bewitched a robe with magic herbs and sent it to the princess as a gift.
Euripides was revolutionary in his retelling of Medea's myth because he was the first one to show that she hadn't killed her children because she was crazy or a barbarian, but because she was extremely distressed and furious at Jason for leaving her to marry a princess.
