Glebe's name derives from the fact that the land on which it developed was originally owned by the Anglican Church.
The Glebe was a land grant of 400 acres given by Governor Arthur Phillip to Reverend Richard Johnson, Chaplain of the First Fleet, in 1790.

Edmund Barton was born in Glebe, New South Wales, on 18 January 1849, and died in Medlow Bath, New South Wales, on 7 January 1920.
Barton attended the Federal Convention in Sydney in March 1891 as a delegate for New South Wales and was a member of the constitution committee.

The Glebe Point YHA has all the amenities that YHA hostels in Australia usually do; it is very clean, well-run, has large social spaces and is high on security.
The location for the hostel is the best part, right in the heart of Glebe, a lovely neighbourhood and a change from the central core of Sydney, but not too far from all the activities in the city proper.
And I must say that Glebe is one of the best places to live in Sydney, what with the cosmopolitan atmosphere and the relaxed feel to the area.

Text from the book: 'The Presiding Officers of the Parliament of New South Wales', Sydney, 1995 Edmund Barton was born on 18 January 1849 at Glebe in Sydney.
In 1884 he had to introduce new Standing Orders to control a number of unruly members, such as David Buchanan, whose behaviour brought upon the Assembly its reputation as the `bearpit of Macquarie Street'.
That same year Barton was one of the New South Wales representatives at the Federal Convention and he became an important member of the Constitution Committee that framed the first draft of a bill to constitute the Commonwealth of Australia.
