Glebe has a robotics program, participating in US FIRST, an international robotics competition where Glebe was a finalist in the Toronto, Ontario regional.
The school was founded not as an independent entity but as an expansion of the Ottawa Collegiate Institute.
Constructed in the early 20th century, the collegiate shows an old-fashioned architectural style that has been kept consistent despite additions to the building.

The educated, professional residents of the Glebe were strongly against such proposals, and in 1974 succeeded in persuading the City of Ottawa to re-zone much of the Glebe to prevent apartments from lining the canal.
Institutional development in the Glebe was driven by the educational, cultural, and religious needs of the burgeoning community at the turn of the century.
The Glebe Collegiate Institute was completed in 1922, and an addition was built in 1929 which housed the High School of Commerce until it moved away in 1967.

Geography/Topography: The Glebe is an "island" bordered on the east and south by the Rideau Canal, on the west by Bronson Avenue (originally a major Concessional division), and on the north by the present-day Queensway, previously the Canada and Atlantic Railway line (CAR) owned by J.R. Booth.
The Glebe was considered rural until it was annexed by the City of Ottawa in 1889.

Interestingly, the word “glebe” comes from the Latin “gleba” which is defined as “a plot of cultivated land, land belonging to or yielding revenue to a parish church.” A century later, the Glebe has grown from a farming community into a distinguished centrally located residential area that is close to every amenity imaginable.
Literally at the doorstep of Glebe residents is the Canal.
The Glebe Collegiate Institute is celebrating its 75th anniversary this May. The many young elementary students in the area will pass through the doors of Glebe Collegiate in years to come and upon graduating some may choose to attend Carleton University in nearby Ottawa South.

A convicted murderer spoke to Kavafian and her grade-11 classmates last year at the Glebe Collegiate Institute.
