The leaves of Gleditisia triacanthos are alternate and compound and some leaves may be twice-compound.
Gleditsia triacanthos grows from eastern Texas to southeastern South Dakota and southernmost Minnesota, east to Alabama and Pennsylvania.
In Wisconsin it is found primarily in the southern counties and most wild populations are associated with the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers.

Gleditsia triacanthos inermis 'Shademaster' - vigorous, vertical growth, vase-shaped in youth and middle age, maturing at 45' tall by 35' wide
However, most of these cultivars are actually derived from buds or stem cuttings taken from the upper canopy of physiologically mature trees (that is, they have reached the point in their life cycle where they can flower and fruit in a reproductive growth phase).
Gleditsia triacanthos inermis is an urban tolerant tree, excellent for its filtered Summer shade and majestic Winter silhouette coupled with its bold texture.

In March 2001, 2-yr-old Gleditsia seedlings (45 to 60-cm tall) were transplanted at 1.4-m spacing into furrows spaced 0.8-m apart created by deep (55-cm) tillage.
Nitrogen was applied to Gleditsia at 0, 75, and 150 kg N/ha/yr in split applications.
Gleditsia was slow-growing and exhibited premature leaf abscission due to moisture stress, while Robinia was high yielding (8 to 9 Mg/ha) during summer.
