Christopher Walken - Films as Actor:
In a particularly compelling scene, Walken visits the office of a small-town lawyer and community activist where he calmly listens to the man's emotional tirade which is meant to be intimidating.
Remaining calm, Walken responds by raising his eyebrow, muttering "mmmmm," and leaving—otherwise keeping his specific thoughts to himself, and thereby withholding the means by which to clearly interpret his interior state.
Walken has quite aptly described his screen persona: "I am the malevolent WASP." Indeed, he has achieved the American dream by playing an assortment of offbeat characters who typically represent a distortion of America's puritan ideals.

The other was for the location itself, Mia Farrow's Connecticut country house, which inspired Woody Allen to write the screenplay with the intention that it would be shot at the house.
Unfortunately, by the time Allen finished the screenplay, it was winter and the location was unusable for a movie so firmly planted in September.
Allen usually doesn't like to give us such neat endings, so a year later we get "September," in which little is resolved and most of the characters end up back where they started.

Shepard, in fact, had originally replaced Christopher Walken, who had played the role for a couple days before Woody decided he was doing it all wrong, man, and sent him off for to be The Prince Of New York or some shit with the fella what did The Driller Killer.
The film is a bizarre, quirky, low-key affair about Woody cuts his wife to pieces and then someone finds one of her hands and assumes it to be a miraculous relic of some nature, even though it's got red nail-varnish and all.
Allen, though, has the wit, the visual flair and the directorial genius required to ensure that his films stand up under any scrutiny, be it thematic, aesthetic or philosophical.
