Eastwards down the Dee and the Don and northwards across the plain of Buchan towards Rattray Head and Fraserburgh there is a development of biotite gneiss, partly of sedimentary and perhaps partly of igneous origin.
The basic types of the former are represented by the sills of epidiorite and hornblende gneiss in Glen Muick and Glen Callater, which have been permeated by granite and pegmatite in veins and lenticles, often foliated.
At the royal lodge on Loch Muick, 411 m (1350 ft) above the sea, grow larches, vegetables, currants, laurels, roses, etc. Some ash-trees, 1 to 1.5 m (4 or 5 ft) in girth, grow at 400 m (1300 ft) above the sea.

Both glens were much used by people travelling through the central mountains of old Scotland.
The ruins of Kindrochit Castle are still visible in the centre of Braemar adjacent to the River Clunie.
Recently Mar Lodge and the attached Estate was bought by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS).

 Walk Details
This middle section of the walk gives a real sense of the remoteness of the Cairngorms, and as walkers make their way up to where the path joins with the track coming down from the headwaters of the Quoich they should get stunning views of the eastern corries of Beinn a Bhuird.
This glen is perhaps one of the most beautiful and serene glens in the Cairngorms, and as walkers descend gently back towards Invercauld House and the Keiloch they will pass through some fine stands of ancient Caledonian pine.
The overall length of the route will be approximately twenty-five kilometres, and it should be remembered that although the route will be marshalled and patrolled by members of the Team, it is a remote mountainous environment and those wishing to take part should be fit and appropriately equipped.
