GILLES, OSMOND (1788-1866), colonial treasurer and pioneer, was born on 24 August 1788 in London, the son of Osmond and Hannah Gilles.
In 1839 he discovered silver-lead on his property at Glen Osmond, which yielded him substantial royalties until the mine was worked out.

The villages of Magill, Burnside, Beaumont and Glen Osmond were established by the 1870s, providing some of the services and labour necessary for a rural economy.
Mining and some secondary industry were also established: Australia's first metalliferous mine - the silver-lead Wheal Gawler - was operated at Glen Osmond from 1841 to 1851, as were a number of other mines in the Glen Osmond area and in Waterfall Gully.
The chimney of a smelter built by the Glen Osmond Mining Company in the 1840s still stands on a hill at Glen Osmond, a reminder of the area's mining heritage.

This was accidentally discovered, by Cornish migrants Hutchins and Thomas, in February 1841 at Glen Osmond when the wheel of a passing dray broke off a piece of rock and exposed the silver.
Wheal Watkins was opened up in 1843 and worked, like the other mines at Glen Osmond, on and off until 1851 when all miners, and a large percentage of the male population, left the colony for the gold fields in Victoria.
Regular tours of the Glen Osmond mines, which are classified on the Register of the National Estate, are conducted by the Burnside Historical Society on the third Sunday of each month at 1.45 pm.

 Family History of James Ferguson
After he married Eliza Green in 1853, he lived at Frewville, near Glen Osmond, where he had a livery stable, then moved to Adelaide, where he did similar work as an employee, mainly for hotels.
James died in 1875, "On 10th December, at Glenunga, Glen Osmond, James, second son of the late Daniel Ferguson, aged 47 years." He was caught in the rain and was wet through.
He is buried in the Anglican section at St Saviours, Glen Osmond.
