I have to confess that when we stepped on to that square and the band started to play and our marching instructions were give, there was an upsurge of pride amongst the squad, and we drilled and marched on that tarmac with all precision expected on us.
If we had left Glen Parva with a slight feeling of elation because we now considered ourselves soldiers, this feeling was soon deflated on arriving at the Royal Signals section of Catterick barracks.

We have no plans to vary the current use or to dispose of the land known as Glen Parva Barracks, which is used as the Territorial Army (TA) Centre for B Squadron, The Royal Yeomanry, and a detachment from 118 Recovery Company, 104 Battalion REME (V).
A recent decision has been taken to dispose of some land adjacent to Glen Parva Barracks, owned by the East Midland Reserve Forces and Cadet Association, but this will not have a impact on the activities of the units based at the TA Centre.

Sue Townsend was born in a 'prefab' on Hillsborough Road, Glen Parva, Leicester in 1946, and despite quitting school at 15, went on to become a household name after her book "The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, aged 13 ¾" sold millions of copies in Britain and around the world.
Before her success with Adrian Mole, for two decades, she worked in a factory, and was a shop assistant and garage attendant.
As well as attending Glen Hills school in the early 50s, Sue also attended South Wigston Secondary Modern for Girls (approximately from 1957 to 1961) from where some ex-pupils still remember her for her antics.
