GHS Resources :: Glencoe History FAQ   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Glencoe was north of Chicago, and populated by very few people in the pre-Civil War era, (in the first census after Glencoe’s 1869 incorporation, the population was 150) was unlikely to be the home for any runaway slaves.
The station was restored in 1991 in a joint effort of the Village of Glencoe, the Glencoe Historical Society, Metra, the State of Illinois and the federal government.
The Glencoe Company – a group of ten men – had each agreed to put up $5,000 and to subscribe $500 in addition for a church and school, $100 a year for five years to maintain a pastor and $50 a year for five years for a teacher.

By the turn of the century, Glencoe began to deal with the same issues of municipal services that other North Shore communities were facing, and in many cases, teamed with its neighbors to meet the demand for amenities from its mostly middle-class inhabitants.
Glencoe's growth followed the pattern of many Chicago suburbs, “accelerating rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s, with its population peaking at 10,542 in 1970.” Despite the growth, however, Glencoe's demography remained predominately affluent and white.
In recent years, Glencoe's population has declined, falling to 8,762 in 2000—95 percent of whom were white—while incomes remained among the highest in the state and the country.

People For the American Way - How Illogical School Funding Has Eroded Public Education
While there are many factors that determine the quality of a public school, inequitable and insufficient school funding is a major obstacle to improving public education for all children.
Because of its funding crisis and the way in which the state chooses to fund its public education, Illinois schools are struggling financially and are forced to make impossible choices that lower the quality of education they provide.
Since education in Illinois is already polarized by wealthy and poor districts, students in predominantly low-income schools are going to fall further behind.
