Trams are distinguished from other forms of light rail in that they travel along tracks laid down in the right-of-way of city streets.
In Australia trams are only extensively used in Melbourne, all other major cities having dismantled their networks in the mid 20th century ( Sydney does have a new light rail line, Adelaide has a tram line originating from the city centre, terminating at Glenelg).
The trams were first used in the first half of the 19th century, early trams being pulled along by horses.

The only tram still operating in Adelaide is the Glenelg Tram from Victoria Square in the city to the coast at Glenelg.
It was originally slated to be closed with the rest of the tram system in 1958, however it was retained as it was thought it still had 10 years of life left in it.
Glenelg is the starting point of the annual Bay to Birdwood run, in which vintage motor vehicles are driven by their owners from Glenelg to the National Motor Museum at Birdwood.

Like most Cities in Australia, motorists thought that trams were a nuisance and the fact that diesel buses were able to pull into the kerb to pick up passengers made people realise that the tram was something from yesteryears.
In late 1986, these trams were fitted with Pantographs and where moved from the old tram depot in Angas Street in the city to a new depot in Glengowrie.
Today these trams are the oldest passenger cars in continual service, as the Melbourne W 2-Class no longer serve Melbourne in regular service.

The present work upgrading the Glenelg tramline and replacing most of the ageing rolling stock is justified and overdue.
By establishing the tramline down King William St, commuters on the Glenelg tram route will be carried to the heart of the city, not stranded in southern Victoria Square.
I do not hear anyone grumble about the Glenelg tram, which is an argument in favour of extending the line.

The carriage of this tram is similar with Glenelg Line in Adelaide.
tram is clean and eco friendly (as long as they're not jamming cars).
the difference is Melbourne Class W City Circle tram have two side doors, whilst indo tram have only one in the center.

I would love to use a new tram with a beautiful wooden interior and openable windows, rather than a new tram which is the same as all the rest.
The new trams for Adelaide are not the cheapest on offer and maybe the body styling is not that great but its not the worse looking modern tram.
Maybe I am not as up to scratch on the trams as you but so what, from what I have read and seen they seem to be coping although not as good as trams like the A's wich I think are the best (non articulated) modern tram in Australia.

The tram was cut-in from depot - I had boarded 374 as a single @ stop 17 during peak hour and observed 376 depart the depot ahead of us.
Restaurant tram 378 is usually seen down the back of the depot with a tarp over it (protecting the interior I assume) but for the last week or so it has been in the workshops at the back of the depot.
The tram that appeared to be of the Millennium refurb batch (367 iirc) was notably clean on the inside, had the distinct chopper whine on takeoff and appeared to have all new fittings & timbers (incl the brass surrounded "Stopping" light in the passenger saloons.

One of the highlights of the Glenelg Beach Resort is the party atmosphere in the downstairs bar at nights, the management organise live entertainment that ranges from jazz bands in the courtyard to karaoke.
I was staying in the city of Adelaide for a week, after a short tram ride down to the beach I popped in for a cold beer at the 'GBH'.
Glenelg Beach Resort is without doubt a good, clean and (in backpacker terms) quite luxurious place to stay but what I found lacking was atmosphere.
