By 1815 the Jacobite threat had receded sufficiently into history to allow the erection at Glenfinnan of a monument to mark the raising of the standard, paid for by the wealthy descendant of a Jacobite.
This is a stone tower surmounted by a statue of a kilted highlander (not the prince himself as is often thought).
The monument was made possible by the construction in 1812 by Thomas Telford of the road from Fort William to Arisaig, which passed Glenfinnan as its successor does today.

Passing through Glenfinnan, most eyes are drawn towards Loch Sheil and the monument, but behind the viaduct other steep yet retiring hills rise in the usual tangle of crag and tussock grass.

 Walk #186: Glenfinnan to A'Chuil Bothy
The ascent from Glenfinnan to the Beach was fairly straight forward, with tarmac up as far as the bothy at Corryhully being replaced with a good firm track almost all the way up to the top.
Glenfinnan was quite nice, and I walked up to the '45 monument to have a closer look, although I did not bother to climb up it.
The part of this walk from Glenfinnan to the River Pean is shown as Variant 2 in the excellent book "North to the Cape", by Denis Brook and Phil Hinchliffe, Published by Cicerone Press, and ISBN 1-85284-285-7.

Glenfinnan is found on the beautiful Road to The Isles (A830) - between Fort William and Mallaig from where you can take the ferry to the Isle of Skye (there is now also a bridge link at Kyle on the A87).
Sadly the cause of the Jacobites was lost at Culloden a year later and Bonnie Prince Charlie left from the spot he arrived at a little further west at Loch nan Uamh; a cairn marks the spot where Charlie left never to return.
The Glenfinnan Monument was built about 70 years later by Alexander MacDonald of Glenaladale to commemorate the clansmen who died for the Jacobite cause.
