John Everett McIntosh was a dairy farmer in Glengarry County, Ontario.
The "Bibliography of Glengarry County", the -astonishingly thorough work just released by the Glengarry Historical Society, has been billed as a book "published for the use of academic researchers dedicated students of Canadian studies." That may be its intent, but this book is interesting grist for the casual reader too.
And it may be one of the most important published works on the history of this richly historic county, and thus deserves the support of every Glengarry family with connections to its past.

Marianne McLean's research into the settling of Glengarry (the easternmost county of Ontario and `arguably the best-known county in Canada') began with her University of Edinburgh doctoral thesis and has been known since through her publication of a number of well-regarded articles.
In a most impressive piece of historical detective work, she clears up one of the long-standing puzzles of Glengarry County history - whether a single emigration group or two groups settled St Raphaels and whether this was in 1785 or 1786.
In her full description of the system of farming in Scotland, she emphasizes that ways of farming that seemed absurdly primitive to outsiders actually did represent a highly sophisticated and knowledgeable adaptation to a harsh climate and an unproductive soil.

The regiment of Glengarry Light Infantry Fencibles was raised in 1811-12 largely from among the Highland settlers of this region, many of whom had served previously in Europe with the Glengarry (British Highland) Fencibles.
First elected to represent Glengarry in the legislature of Canada in 1841, he became one of the leaders of the Reform party and served in several ministries prior to Confederation in 1867.

The WMMP was abandoned by the Counties in the fall of 1997 for several reasons including strong public opposition to the perceived flawed site selection process.
