(1812-1872), Canadian statesman, was born at St Raphael, Glengarry county, Ontario, on the 12th of December 1812.
In the debates on federation he opposed the measure, but on its passage was in 1867 entrusted by the Conservatives with the task of organizing the provincial government of Ontario.
He ruled the province with economy and efficiency, but was defeated in December 1871 by the Liberals, resigned the premiership, and died on the 1st of June 1872.

The 19th century immigration to Ontario, which was mostly from the United States and the British Isles, decisively shaped a basic OIntario character strong enough so that later immigrants have been content to discover and conform to it.
The "Bibliography of Glengarry County", the -astonishingly thorough work just released by the Glengarry Historical Society, has been billed as a book "published for the use of academic researchers dedicated students of Canadian studies." That may be its intent, but this book is interesting grist for the casual reader too.
And it may be one of the most important published works on the history of this richly historic county, and thus deserves the support of every Glengarry family with connections to its past.

In Marianne McLean's book, The People of Glengarry: Highlanders in Tradition, 1745-1820 (1993, McGill-Queen’s University Press: Montreal), she talks about the main thrust of highland immigration to Glengarry County, Ontario, between 1770 and 1820, calling it the highest concentration of Scottish immigration in Canada.
By the time the county had started to fill up, later arrivals from Scotland were willing to rent swampy land in Glengarry just to be near family and friends, rather than get better land for free in Rideau County.
As impressive as the records for Glengarry County are (in the fact that there are a whole pile of them), there are often entries that contradict, names that get changed or shifted, and whole pieces of information that are told through memory much later on, and not fact.
