Glengarry Glen Ross (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glengarry Glen Ross is the title of a 1992 movie, based on the 1984 Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning play of the same name by David Mamet, who adapted it into a screenplay for the film.
The film shows parts of two days in the lives of four desperate real estate agents who are prepared to engage in any number of unethical and/or illegal acts (from lies and flattery to bribery, threats and intimidation to burglary) in order to sell undesirable real estate to unwilling prospective buyers ("leads").
During filming, the movie was jokingly referred to by the actors as "Death of a Fucking Salesman," owing to its salty language.

SPLICEDwire | "Glengarry Glen Ross" review
When a play is adapted to film it is either completely re-written to conform with the unspoken Hollywood style, or altered only slightly in stage direction and other technicalities.
In the case of "Glengarry Glen Ross", the latter is true, and it didn't work as well as the producers would hope.
"Glengarry Glen Ross" stays interesting for about 30 minutes because the characters are so real, but the dialogue soon grinds to a halt because of the abrasive way the lines are delivered.

After years of waiting, Artisan Home Entertainment finally delivers "Glengarry Glen Ross" on DVD in a 2-disc set to celebrate the movie’s 10th Anniversary, and to say it’s a great release is in fact an understatement.
Carefully, the film lets us observe how each of the characters deals with the situation and how frictions, peer pressure, their past and present circumstance shape each one of them into what they are.
I always find "Glengarry Glen Ross" to be an utterly impressive film that relies solely on the performance of its cast and the filmmakers to drive home a story that is as simple as it is powerful.

Glengarry Glen Ross is a sort of postmodern Death of a Salesman, in which the Willy Lo-men are not angst-ridden with thoughts of spiritual redemption.
Because they have already sold their souls for the power of the dollar, for the careers that they willingly place before their lives and families, and for the chance to be bigger than the next guy and to cut that son of a bitch down to size.
Glengarry Glen Ross (even its title is a cryptic puzzle) pushes that concept to its limit with characters whose very livelihood is based on talking in circles.

 IGN: Glengarry Glen Ross Review
Yes, on the surface Glengarry Glen Ross sounds like a boring, talky tale but the film is revered in acting and directing circles for its masterful pacing, near perfect dialogue, and stark alienating setting.
Interestingly enough though, the real enjoyment in the film is not from the story or figuring out who roped the leads but in watching the performances from actors at or near the top of their game.
Since much of the film takes place at night and in a driving rain, the outdoor sequences (as they dash to the bar or restaurant across the street) are immersive.

I Viddied it on the Screen-Glengarry Glen Ross
The point that Glengarry Glen Ross is a depressing movie does not seem to have really been brought up, and I not only feel that critics and viewers are sidestepping a major issue that needs to be brought up, I feel that not doing so borders on the inhuman and the inhumane.
There is romantic irony in that the film is deeply cynical and ends deeply unhappily, arguing that that is the way it goes.
My embarrassed repulsion of Glengarry Glen Ross then further compounds the sense of failure that the film is compounding in me. It's a new classic, and I am denying it BECAUSE it is effective.

Glengarry Glen Ross premiered in London in 1983, and its American premiere followed in Chicago in 1984.

David Mamet's "Glengarry Glen Ross," an adaptation of his award-winning play, boasts a powerhouse cast — Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey, Jonathan Pryce —; so, it's only natural that the film would be loaded with powerhouse performances.
From the main office, a brusque, tough-guy executive (Baldwin) sets up the film's premise as he lays out the latest contest — first prize is a Cadillac, second is a set of steak knives and third prize is that everyone else is fired.
The first half of the film focuses primarily on Levene and the second on Roma, with the rest of the ensemble in support.

The film features a new character that was not in the original play: Blake (expertly played by Alec Baldwin), the big boss, whose motto is "ABC--Always Be Closing." Baldwin's one scene, early on in the film, sets the intense tone for the entire narrative.
Unlike Miller's Death of a Salesman, Glengarry Glen Ross is blessedly unsanctimonious and unsentimental.
With some luck, the prominence of Glengarry Glen Ross as a play and the commercial appeal of the film may once and for all force us to reevaluate Death of a Salesman's undeserved status as a great American classic, relegating it to perhaps a monument, but one of the distant past.

The film of comedy is such that in every scene, the hero makes a misstep and yet is rescued at the end by the forces of good, or by God, or by a deus ex machina.
Nonetheless, the American tradition of film overall is that it's a commercial medium.
The films of William Wyler came out of that and the films of Orson Welles and Stanley Kubrick happened in spite of that.
