 Glenhuntly, Victoria
Glenhuntly is situated in the present day Caulfield South and was west of the swamp and heathlands that formed much of the Caulfield/Carnegie area.
Many residential subdivisions were of generous dimensions, being approved during Caulfield council's preoccupation with town planning in the 1920s.
The strip shopping centre along the Glenhuntly Road tramline, either side of the railway crossing, is an active area with several buildings surviving in substantially original form.

 Caulfield, Victoria
Melbourne's urban expansion as it affected the Caulfield municipality was begun on the western side well before the turn of the century and concluded on the eastern side where it adjoined Oakleigh in the late 1930s.
The Roads District became a shire on 17 April, 1871, and the Caulfield railway station was built in 1879 as part of the South Yarra to Oakleigh to Gippsland line.
The origin of the name is uncertain, although John Caulfield, a builder who arrived in Melbourne in 1837, has been suggested as a source.

The second electric tramway in Melbourne's suburbs was opened on the 11th October 1906 and ran from Flemington Bridge (near the terminus of the North Melbourne cable tram route) to Essendon, with a branch to Saltwater River (Now Maribyrnong River) and a short spur along Puckle St Moonee Ponds, to Moonee Ponds railway station.
The first tramway to operate in Melbourne was an isolated line from Fairfield railway station.
The lease of the cable trams by the Melbourne Tramways and Omnibus Co. expired on 30th June, 1916 and it was decided to appoint an interim Melbourne Tramways Trust to operate the system until it was decided what to do about the growing problems of street passenger transport in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

On 24 April 1914 the Caulfield station loop line was opened, being built to serve the nearby racecourse.
Electricity was supplied by the Melbourne Electricity Supply Company from its Richmond power station, and was transmitted as 4000 V AC to the P&MTT substation at Malvern for conversion to 600 V DC.
This had not been possible earlier since the area was outside the municipal boundary of Prahran and involved negotiations with the Melbourne City Council.

Thomas Bent, as President of the Shire of Moorabbin led a delegation of councillors and ratepayers to the Commissioner of Railways asking that a station be built at Bay Road.
The stations at that time were known as Highett’s Road, Balcombe’s Road, East Brighton, South Brighton, Glenhuntly Road and North Road.
Thomas Bent was a councillor at Brighton from 1874-1909, Mayor 1874, 1878, 1879, 1884, 1885, 1887, 1888, 1903, and 1908; councillor at Moorabbin 1863-1909, President 1884-85, 1885-86, 1887-88, 1888-89, 1900-01, 1901-02, Commissioner of Railways in 1881-83 and Minister 1902-03, Premier 1904-1908.

The tramline was opened along Glenhuntly Road (where the railway line and station intersected with it), in 1889.
The short-lived Rosstown railway line from Oakleigh (1879) was opened at the conclusion of a long debate which held out the prospect that the railway line from Melbourne to Gippsland might run via Elsternwick.
The strip shopping centre along Glenhuntly Road became a strong retail location, and by the 1990s was ranked in the best ten in metropolitan Melbourne.
