Glenkinchie - About Whisky - Malt - www.scotchwhisky.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Glenkinchie is a Lalland (Lowland Dialect) corruption of 'de Quincy', a family which owned tracts of East Lothian - the 'Garden of Scotland' - in the 14th century.
In the 1880s Glenkinchie was bought by a consortium of whisky merchants and blenders from Edinburgh and Leith, which re-established production after rebuilding the distillery and maltings.
Glenkinchie was bought and has remained in operation under the license of John Haig & Co. The distillery has always maintained its close associations with local agriculture, and its farm was for many years managed by the distillery manager W. Macpherson, who was nationally acclaimed for his championship herd of Aberdeen Angus Cattle.

The visit to the Glenkinchie distillery is rather traditional, and perfectly in the style of visits organised by great industral groups like Diageo.
This unlike the visit of Caol Ila for instance (even if Caol Ila belongs to the same group), where the visit is guided by a former worker of the distillery, who spent 30 years of his life making whisky.
However, the visit of Glenkinchie is warmly recommanded, not really because of the distillery itself, but because of the very nice distillery museum it hostes.

It has a more solid malt base than the Glenkinchie, but in a straightforward way, and not too invasive - the fluid can be drunk in larger swigs without suffering nasal or esophagal burnout.
