The current distillery was built in 1858, near where the rivers Avon and Livet meet.
In 1880, the Smiths won exclusive rights to the name The Glenlivet, enabling them to protect their trademark against encroachment by other, lesser quality whiskies.

Brand owners go to great lengths to make sure that each batch is the same as the last - you are right that, certainly for a best seller like Glenlivet, many (sometimes hunderds of) casks are vatted together to achieve the flavour the owner wants, and to achieve it repeatedly.

I was strictly a bourbon and vodka man when it came to spirits until I tried a Glenlivet, I was pleasantly surprised.
It's packed full of delightful flavors, goes down like silk and has a wonderful, lingering finish that I can't describe, you'll have to try it for yourself, I don't believe you'll be found wanting.
Glenlivet is smoother than Glenfiddich but has a tad less character.

Glenlivet advises that you add a splash of water to this scotch before tasting, and I agree.
While the French Oak did not impart the complexity that I had imagined it would, this remains a good scotch, and a bottle that is well worth finishing.
