George Smith, a well-known illicit distiller in Glenlivet and a tenant of the Duke of Gordon, was the first person to acquire a license under the 1823 Excise Act.
Still a family concern Glenlivet was amalgamated with Glen Grant distillery in 1953 and with Longmorn in 1970, and the whole group was acquired by Seagrams in 1977.
A visitor centre was opened in 1978 in a barley loft in the oldest part of the distillery, and welcomes about 80,000 visitors a year.

Recently the whisky was made by Ian Mitchell, who was born in the distillery grounds, died in 1992 and was preceded in his job by his father and grandfather.

The distillery is open for viewing during the summer and the visitor centre, formerly the grain store and malting house, contains a multi-media exhibition, together with shop and a cafe.
The house is in the care of the Scalan Association who have recently renovated the building, and is open to visitors throughout the year.

George Smith (of George & JG Smith) was the first distiller in the Glen to produce legal whisky on a large scale, a choice which forced Smith to arm himself against the threat of attack from the illicit distillers in the region.
A second challenge came in the form of the neighbouring whisky producers in the Glen (and outside the Glen) when they attempted to use the Glenlivet name to market their own whisky.
With the courts on his side, Smith forced his neighbours to relinquish the name and today Glenlivet remains one of the most renowned whiskies in the world.

The Tamdhu-Glenlivet distillery, designed by the distillery architect and engineer Charles Doig of Elgin, was commissioned in the summer of 1897 with George Reid as manager.
From 1899, the distillery was kept under tight control from the Glasgow office of Highland Distilleries Co Ltd which placed emphasis on consistent quality control and, by 1906, the whisky had been perfected to the satisfaction of James Robertson of Robertson and Baxter Ltd.
In 2003, the distillery was still active as part of the Highland Distillers Group Ltd. Its whisky is mainly used for blending although in 1976 the company launched its own eight-year-old single malt whisky which continues to be marketed.
