Despite the absence of any supporting material evidence the Roman temporary marching camp at Glenluce was almost certainly built during the campaigns of governor Gnaeus Julius Agricola sometime around AD81 (see quote above).
(1) Glenluce (NX 196566): a marching-camp on the left bank of the Water of Luce, immediately S of the village of Glenluce, has been revealed by aerial survey.
About 400 m of the NW side, at least 220 m of the SE side, the whole of the SW side, also about 400 m long, have been recorded.
The first designated Abbot of Glenluce, whose name is unknown, would have arrived with twelve of the white-robed Cistercian monks and simply set to work clearing the site and building the abbey.
To the south of the abbey church most other buildings in the complex were grouped around three sides of a square cloister, where the monks would walk and pass their time in silent contemplation.
Glenluce's position saved it from the repeated destruction that befell so many abbeys further east, but it still suffered from its fair share of disputes over land rights and ownership.
Wigtownshire County Golf Club is situated on the outskirts of the village of Glenluce, eight miles east of Stranraer, two hundred yards on the south side on the A75 Euro-route (see sign posts on A75).
Take the A75 from Dumfries for 64 miles towards Stranraer, at Glenluce bypass proceed for approximately 1 mile then turn left, as per the road signs.
P and O - Larne to Cairnryan, then take the A77 towards Stranraer turning at Innermessan onto the A751 towards Dumfries for 1.7 miles then the A75 towards Dumfries for 7 miles.

Glenluce is an excellent base for tourists visiting the area as it is close to Stairhaven beach on Luce Bay but has good access to the Rhins of Galloway where Logan Gardens are situated and the Machars area where there are many interesting attractions including good golf courses, coastal walks etc.
Glenluce is a large rural village situated some 16 miles to the west of Newton Stewart and 9 miles east of the busy Ferry Port at Stranraer.
When the community was dispersed to other abbeys, he was given the honorary titles of Abbot Emeritus of Fort Augustus and Titular Abbot of Iona.
He retired to Edinburgh, from where he continued his historical research, writing articles on Fearn Abbey, in Easter Ross, and on Abbot Walter Malin, of Glenluce, in Galloway, for The Innes Review, as well as contributing to a book and conference on the fourth centenary of the Scots College in Rome.
Other articles were written for the Oxford Companion to Scottish History and for an American encyclopedia of monasticism.
The village of Glenluce is steeped in history and the Abbey is well worth a visit.
