The Friday Review: Abe: Wrong For All The Right Reasons
Glenn Dakin was one of several exciting and innovative British cartoonists to emerge from the small press movement of the early eighties.
Dakin also has a far more keenly developed sense of whimsy than Campbell, and he is by no means averse to suddenly dropping fantastical elements into an otherwise mundane story (see 'Abe and the Fairies').
Dakin's deceptively simple drawings give ABE an artist's sketchbook feel; there's a real sense of spontaneity and invention, as if Dakin were sketching out his thoughts directly onto the page as they occur to him.

In the early Abe strips, Dakin hovers stylistically midway between Jules Feiffer and James Thurber, only at half the size, half the story speed, and twice the graphic density.
As the collection progresses, Dakin's art and text both loosen up and broaden, sometimes to the edge of meaninglessness: His expressionistic blobs and free verse are not entirely compelling, and lack the direction of his fantasy tales.
In both cases, Dakin frequently mixes insight, lyricism, and clever wordplay in a wholly touching way.

Dakin organizes his pieces so that each panel has a thought accompanied by an illustrative picture.
Dakin picks out the details of travel — the sprig of herbs served with the meal or the yellow leaves blowing by the hostel window - and evokes the heightened state of awareness that always accompanies going to new places.
Glenn Dakin's early Abe stories ingeniously fold conventional comicbook narrative, superheroes and sci-fi, into works of whimsy and reflection.

Dakin's comic timing is not restricted to his writing.
The Devil here is a comical figure, not a terrifying one, more of a hapless guy trying to get through his work day than a skillful manipulator, and the man is a genial, intelligent fellow, when he could easily have come off as an annoying moralizer.
In addition, while the setting is a featureless desert, Dakin's stories often call for props or costumes that add a nice bit of detail to the story, and he has plenty of gags requiring visual timing, such as the punchlines to the magic mirror or comet strips.

Dakin's art, like so many semi-autobiographical artists, is a loose, sketchy style.
So much of Abe seems to depend on a certain amount of reader empathy; Dakin is baring his soul for all to take a look at, and if the reader isn't able to feel what Dakin is, the whole thing runs the danger of falling flat.
